What I find amusing about McDonald's isn't the (lack of) quality of the food, but rather the warped mindset resulting from the sheer ubiquity of the place. Pretty much the only time I eat an McDonald's is when I'm at the airport needing a breakfast sandwich, so I know little about their menu other than that they have a breakfast sandwich called a McMuffin. Most of the time when I ask what's in the McMuffin I just get a confused look in response, because why would they ever think about what's actually in the food, nobody needs to ask that.

Yeah, my girlfriend and I went to a McDonald's once and she asked what was in the McFeast burger. She totally confused the poor wretch behind the counter because obviously no one actually knows what goes into anything there. Personally I choose to confuse the McWretches by ordering odd combinations of food, like plain sausage McMuffins with hasbrowns and tubs of hotcake syrup.

A Mcdonald's employee tried to shortchange me for $10 once in 2004 so I stopped going there.  The only reason I was eating there was because I was going to work at 3 AM and it was the only place open.  I suppose she thought that I was just coming home from a party and wouldn't notice.

I had a burger from a local bakery the other day and that kicked the ass of any sandwhich I would get from a fast food place.

Taco bell is diarrhea. As in, their chili cheese burritos are diarrhea in a tortilla wrap. Ridiculously cheap, and that's why.

We don't have any mexican places here, except one which I've heard is appalling (and when British people think a Mexican food place is appalling, you can bet it's appalling).

I sometimes make my own; Edith gave me a Mexican Meat-Free Cookbook!

Saw a live recreation of Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense on Saturday. It blew me away. They did everything in their power to recreate it faithfully. Same outfits, same dance moves, same GIANT SUIT. I was totally impressed.

It was awesome.

The venue was a huge art gallery on Cherokee street, where I had never been. The neighborhood looked sketchy, but I think it was mostly because I came from the wrong side of town. Went a different way home and found several music stores and now I want to go back during the day sometime.

I am so jealous. Was it at Firefly, or Fire...something, or something like that? Someone from my work lives around Cherokee, and he was always trying to get me to go to that art gallery. And yeah, Cherokee is kinda sketchy, but Apop is there! And Binge & Purge! And they are having that craft fair there in June!

Also, guys, yeah, most fast food is horrible. Chipotle is sadly the best Mexican place around here, not counting the tiny little dirty stand that I hear is amazing, or the place that is all the way on the other side of the river but is staffed and owned by only Mexicans. But seriously. I am constantly on the quest to find The Best Mexican In St. Louis and it has yet to happen. Yelp once directed me to this place where their burritos tasted like lasagna(bad lasagna too. I ate about two bites and thats all I could take), and is owned by a stuffy old white lady who has murals painted on the walls of her restaurants that show her in "Mexico," wearing a sombrero, drinking Corona with "the locals." She also owns another Mexican place called Amigo Joe's.

But seriously, how can you fuck up Mexican food so bad? Even I can make it! It's not difficult.

Taco Bell's okay.

I mean, it's terrible food, but you don't go to Taco Bell looking to eat good Mexican food. If you do that, you're sort of an idiot? You go to Taco Bell to eat Taco Bell. It's like...an entire different genre of consumable products.

Possibly! If I did get it backwards then Emaline I'm sorry I tacitly accused you of racism.

That said, I'm incredibly tickled by the idea of hating on a Mexican restaurant because it is owned and operated by real Mexicans so I'm not changing it.

um, perhaps my reading comprehension is off today, but I don't see where she said anything about the restaurant or its location being bad.

I'm incredibly tickled by the idea of hating on a Mexican restaurant because it is owned and operated by real Mexicans so I'm not changing it.

Again, perhaps my reading comprehension is off, but she appears to be saying just the opposite, the rather straightforward sentiment that the restaurant must be better Mexican food because it's run by Mexicans.

I know it's old(er), but Chipotle is awesome, but by no means is it mexican, even though most of them seem to employ mostly hispanic people. But seriously. If you want a basic burrito that uses decent ingredients (unlike Taco Bell!) then it's a good place to go. However, Qdoba and Habańero are both better. (The latter is a chain, but it may be local? Anywho, all ingredients are fresh and organic and OMG AMAZING. Qdoba has the variety Chipotle lacks and is more delicious.)

Hey Jens, as far as your amazon wishlist or whatever, what books have you read (recently) that you have enjoyed? How do you feel about poetry? Philosophy? Essays? Anything you really dislike?

Bloggy-blog: I spent the past three days (long weekend) volunteering at a youth retreat. It was a blast - saw old friends I hadn't seen in ages, got to completely escape computers and telephones for a few days, got very little sleep, read some Jan Zwicky, Herakleitos and Diogenes in my spare time, and enjoyed the lake. It was cold, but some friends provided hugs and cuddles, so all was well. I'm back in my parents house happy for my own bed, but really dreading work tomorrow.
I haven't used this thread in a while, so in case I haven't mentioned, I'm working in the IT department at the office my dad works in, until the end of June. The pay is great, but the job is incredibly mindless, and the atmosphere is something I can't get into at all. While everyone is incredibly friendly, their ambitions don't jive with my own one bit. Plus it is a mining company, and I'm having trouble justifying the work to myself, ethically. I'm going to be really happy once I leave this to work on the Okanagan in July.

Perth (and Australia in general I think) seems to be undergoing a bit of a renaissance re: Mexican food where there seems to be an awesome traditional (i.e; not Tex-Mex) Mexican place everywhere you look nowadays. I'm not sure why this is but I'm not gonna think about it too hard in case I jinx it, because Mexican is my favouritest food in the whole damn world.

Oh god, Mexican food. Yesssssss. Living in Socal, there is much to be had. Each place seems to have one or two things they do especially well, like how Rubio's has awesome enchilada plates but if you want a burrito, Baja Fresh is a better choice.

Emaline, the best food is always at the dirtiest looking place.

This is at least partly true. There's a place called Albertacos right near my school, which is not very well kept up and could use a new paint job, but they have something they call the California Burrito; it has beef, french fries, cheese and sour cream. It sounds weird but it's sooooooo good. I love Mexican food, it makes me glad I live where I do.

Edit: That is a nice house Lunchy! It is very shiny, which is an important thing to look for while deciding on a place to live.
