I have to get surgery on Tuesday to remove my wisdom teeth. :( I've never had surgery before and am pretty scared.

if it's any consolation, having my wisdom teeth and tonsols out in the same summer pretty much made for the best summer ever.

3 months of video games, painkillers, and movies? hell yeah

Cops Don't Like That

It's more a topic for the DISCUSS forum (I'll go ahead and repost the link there), but this is an extremely important matter. It's increasingly becoming illegal to document police abuses in a peaceful manner.

It's not so bad! Really the worst part is recovery. Your face will hurt and maybe swell and you can't eat solid food for a while. Also don't watch funny movies, because laughing is really painful. But really, you'll be ok. c:

Grandpa is in the hospital. I'm honestly not surprised, considering he fell twice in the last week, one of them being on pavement. I just hope it isn't serious.

If I seem rather nonchalant about this, it's because he's been deteriorating for a long time. My Aunt and Mom were guessing he'd pass in a year or two last morning. So I suppose it runs in the family or something.

So I have a happy end to our house-hunting story: We just got approved for and will be putting a deposit down tomorrow on a condo that's 2 br / 1.5 ba, with a dishwasher and a washer and dryer inside the unit, small front and back yards, a working fireplace, and two balconies!  And for $150/mo. less than we were willing to pay, too.

Also it's not a frathouse, unlike our current apartment building.  Whoo-oo!

I get asked that question a lot. Only instead of "cos it's badass" it's "because it's FUCKING UNICORNS!" which can go either way.

Shit.

My across the street neighbor, Jan,  here in Belgium has always been a pretty close friend of mine, as well as a bit of a problem kid. He's tried lots of different jobs and such, tried living at home, tried living on his own, has broken into places, been in a rehab place, has run away a lot (two weeks ago he took a flight to Egypt and stayed in some randomers house in Cairo for a week without telling anyone), and now he's finally settled down a bit and has started studying nursing. He was about to sit his first exam today, but I was woken up by my dad - who was on his way to work - telling me that an ambulance had shown up to their front door, and that Jan had been carried away in it.

Shit. Fuck.

So I wanted to wait until this could go on the picture thread but whatever.

I turned 23 on Sunday.  My birthday present from my parents was my own set of fire poi, and they showed up in the mail on Thursday, a day before I went off to camp at Playa Del Fuego, a regional Burning Man-related festival where 1200 burners get together in Delaware and have a little weekend burn (we call them "burns" because the main event during such a festival is that we get together in a field and burn a thing and celebrate around the bonfire after it collapses.  At Burning Man, obviously, it is a man.  At PDF we burn a pony.)

Anyway, I basically got to do most of my favorite things on my birthday.  I woke up pretty early (probably around 9ish, my tent had basically turned into a sauna), had pancakes for breakfast (which a campmate had generously made for us), walked around meeting and hanging out with people all morning, ran into some kids playing Magic (seriously, in the middle of a camping festival), and played with them for a bit in the early afternoon.  In the midafternoon I took some LSD with my girlfriend, and we discovered that it was highly potent after about an hour.  We had stupefyingly good sex around dinnertime (seriously, sex while peaking on acid is total insanity in all of the best ways), and then headed over to the center of the festival after dark and started to rehearse a choreographed fire-spinning performance with 12 or so other people (I'm part of Philly Fire Conclave now, and my girlfriend had to stand in for someone who couldn't perform that night).  We practiced a bit, and then lit up and performed in front of a few hundred people (I didn't tell anyone I was tripping until we were done, of course), then as the nighttime set in, my girlfriend and I walked around for a while and met some more new people and contributed to some group art projects.  At around 10 or 11ish, as the primary effects of the acid were tapering off but not yet gone, we took some MDMA powder that I'd bartered for a couple days earlier, and proceeded to a camp where some photographers had built an incredibly high-production-value fire-performance-photography setup, and we spun fire some more and got some really incredible photographs out of it (they'll be in my email inbox soon, I'm told, so I'll put some up on the photo thread once I see them).  Then we spent the rest of the night hanging out with a variety of our new friends, and I geeked out about poi a bunch and learned a lot of new stuff from spinners who are way better than me.  We watched the sunrise from a couch on top of some scaffolding and fell asleep in a hammock at 7 or 8 in the morning (then woke up all groggy a couple hours later to strike camp and go back home, where we passed out a little after noon and slept til early the next morning).

Basically my birthday was fantastic in every way, and I'll have photos to prove it soon!

Oh god I am so ready to start living by myself. I just came home and found my housemate spitting into the kitchen sink, and I asked her if she was okay, and she said "Yeah, I'm just taking some Chinese herbs and they're really gross." I thought about asking her not to spit into the kitchen sink, especially when the bathroom sink is not five paces away, but I just could not be bothered because I know she wouldn't understand and god-dammit I just shouldn't have to explain to someone that spitting all over the sink in which we wash our dishes is not very hygienic.

Update: he took pills apparently. He's fine, they called the ambulance in time, and they said he's okay.

His parents came over here to talk to my parents, but they had already gone to work, so they talked to me instead. His dad accused all of Jan's friends, including me, for letting him do stupid stuff like take drugs, proceeding to claim that "if it was up to him he would take his gun and shoot all of them". After they had left, he came back five minutes later to tell me that I should keep what he said to myself, not in a threatening way, more in a "I was beside myself" kind of way.

This is insane. This man is insane. I understand that he's frustrated about his son, but apparently this isn't the first time he's tried to kill himself, and they pretend that it didn't happen and blame it on his friends every time, even if we've made it plenty clear that we try their utmost to keep drugs and "bad things" away from him.

Jan was over last night for like ten minutes to show me and a friend the pictures he had taken on his excursion to egypt earlier this month (the one he told no one about). I had hung out with this friend earlier in the day and he had told me he wasn't talking to Jan because he didn't want to have to deal with Jan's dad anymore, not while Jan had exams anyway. But I hadn't seen him in a couple of months, so I had dropped by to say hi, and he came over afterwards.

I don't know whether I should tell his other friends about the shooting thing. Like, I really don't know, I'm afraid that his dad might actually be capable of doing it. I don't think he would, he's a police officer (however that might factor into it), but still. If I tell these guys, they'll definitely tell their parents, and this whole thing will blow up even more and it might not have been a thing, and I really don't want that to happen. If I don't, and something happens... I know really I should tell the police or something, but that's not like it's information that they can actually work with.

God fucking damnit. I know it sounds selfish, and this guy is obviously not in a right state of mind and needs help and his parents need to admit that but don't blaming his friends, and I feel really bad, and really want to go visit him in the hospital and check up on him, but I'm jumping at fucking shadows right now.

Edit: I mean, yay for being at home for one day for the first time in like six months am I right?

So Im in guelph now!

I hitchhiked through montreal for a really rad event, met a bunch of rad people. But in general had kind of a scary time in Montreal, but it was still pretty great and I went to the most amazing ska/crust/dance show in a church that was converted into a squat and then later bought and made a legal house and space. I'm obscenely broke and found out that I have to vacate the place that I finally just considered home by September. I've had a lot of fun so far but I'm kind of freaking out and a little bit miserable. I'm heading to Toronto to see tania next and maybe she'll rub my head.

The electricity gets turned off here today, and turned on at the apartment. I'm not allowed to move in until the utilities are on, which is odd, but whatever.

Probably not going to have internet for awhile.

Try not to celebrate the fact too loudly.

Holy fuck, I am moving out like today. Holy fuck, holy fuck. This is amazing.

I find it odd that I'm not allowed to move in and then have the stuff turned on. That's what my father's tenants have always done.

Annnnnd holy shit, I just got like $750 in savings bonds in the mail.

AWWW FUUUUUUUUUCK THREAD.

I told my friend I wouldn't date her friend because she's hanging out with us all summer.  But I've had a crush on this girl and we both like each other.  Should I pull a Jim and Pam and secretly date her, or ignore it?  Aw fuck what do i do?

Also, I got a raise at work and my life is pretty awesome.

Letter we are sending to our landlord. Good? Bad? Should we send it?

Dear S***,

To put it mildly, we feel completely neglected as tenants. I have had far more unsatisfying experiences since the sale of my apartment building than positive experiences. My old landlord responded to issues personally. When something broke, he was often at the apartment that day, and if he was not I knew exactly when it was going to be addressed.

The most recent issue is the dishwasher. I called you about the issue of the dishwasher being broken on Friday, April 30th. You told me that a maintenance person would be there the following day. In fact they were there on Saturday 5/1 and Sunday 5/2. I left my house unlocked both days and received no news at all about the repair. In fact, the maintenance crew entered my house to use my electricity to make repairs on the rest of the apartment building, without so much as even glancing at the dishwasher problem I had. To their credit, they did take down the broken screens in my apartment, which mind you were in the exact same condition they were when I moved in and when the current owner purchased the place.

I called R**** on May 3rd. He said that he would order the parts for the dishwasher that day and had me take cell phone pictures of the front of the dishwasher and the inside since he had not taken a look himself over the weekend. As you know, after that I went through a long period of hearing nothing of my repairs due to R****'s death in the family. I understand things happen and I also understand what it is like to lose a Mother, this I can forgive. However I was assured things would still be taken care of and they were not.

More than 3 weeks passed before I finally got two out of the four screens that were meant to be installed in the house. Prior to this, I could not even open the front windows to enjoy the weather or to cut down on air conditioning bills because I had no screens.

I contacted R**** again on 5/25, he said (as he had said prior to this) that he was "just about to call me" and how "weird" that was. Considering that R**** has only called me once since the beginning of this problem on 4/30, I fail to believe that. During the conversation on 5/25 R**** stated that he had just ordered the correct parts finally after getting the wrong parts several times. He said they would arrive within 5 days but last time they arrived in 3.

After giving him plenty of time to call me and finally fix this problem, I called R**** again on 6/3. He stated that he "got the part 2-3 days ago" and could not make it that day but would "try to squeeze me in" on Friday, 6/4. I'm sorry if this seems a little self-centered, I realize that he is busy but when someone has been waiting for 5+ weeks for a repair, I'd think they would take priority. As of this letter's writing I still have not heard back and I have zero confidence that this repair will happen today or probably until I call back yet again and ask what is going on.

To be honest though these recent issues are not the root of the problem. Overall I feel the most neglected by the management of this property. My point is this: I do not feel like it is my job to keep the house in repair and to hassle repair people to make sure it gets done. If I owned a house, I would expect to do this but I would also hire accountable people to do my repairs. I have spent considerable time and effort in attempting to accommodate these repairs. I have also spent considerable time washing dishes for the last 5 weeks. The dishwasher is in fact part of the lease and part of what I am paying rent for. I do not feel that I should be paying full rent when articles included in the rent are down for more than a month, let alone the amount of time and frustration I have spent attempting to get it repaired when I am not the person writing the check to the repair people.

This is not the first and only complaints I have. As you may recall, I went through a lot of trouble getting my refrigerator replaced, more than once. I had to be home for these deliveries, and even front the money to pay the delivery people. When I wanted to install satellite television, you were unavailable for my calls, even after getting back in town. The best I got from you were text messages. I do not feel like it is professional to be unavailable by phone and then to text message me even when I specifically request to speak to you. You even used to be fairly available by phone and responsive, but lately every time I call you I get voicemail and no return call. Let's not even mention the fact that I think the lawn has only been mowed a handful of times this season. Before the first time it was cut about a month or so ago, the grass was halfway up to my knees. Since then, it has been maintained much better, but it is still getting much longer than anyone else on the street before it is attended to.

The bottom line is this. I do not want an unpleasant business relationship. I do not want to start a war, or make legal threats, or anything else. I simply want to pay you guys rent every month and have my apartment maintained inside and out. I do not want to move out of the area, or even out of the apartment. I have been in this building for close to 3 years now, I plan on staying longer, and I'm honestly not that difficult to satisfy.  I just want things to improve and to have a mutually beneficial arrangement.

Thanks for your time,

We are adding more(like the stuff about us calling and complaining about the neighbor playing loud music at all hours, and him never doing anything about it, and the hallway lights being dead for months[these are hallways with stairs in them], etc etc etc.), but overall, does this sound bad?

so yeah my bills came through and they're about twice as much as i budgeted for because one of my housemates kept the heating on full blast since october (he still keeps switching it right up every day even though it's hot out) and i totally can't afford it so i'm losing my entire deposit, and my landlord(best friend's boyfriend) is going to hate me for all time. thanks, that guy.

also the landlord got a new oven for the house but he hasn't got anyone to install it. so as of tomorrow morning, we are going to have no oven, grill or stove top, so all my food is going to have to be microwaved until he gets the oven installed or i move out. guess which is going to happen first. i move out july 1st.

i want to cry so hard.

Someone stole our fucking thyme plant off our windowsill! I thought it had maybe just fallen off into the bushes, and that my boyfriend was crazy for thinking someone stole it, but we went out looking for it and there is no sign of it! How do you steal someone's plant?? And it wasn't even a pretty plant! It was thyme! Who needs thyme that bad??

my dog had a bunch of blood taken today for testing and has been extremely out of it all evening. for the last several hours he has been doing this thing where he slowly walks into my room, stands really, really close to me and then just stares up at me with a glassy smiling look on his face for 15-20 minutes. then he walks out, and a few minutes later repeats the whole thing starting from the beginning. it sounds creepy but it is actually really heartbreakingly adorable.

It was in a plastic container though. And was small enough that I wouldn't think the effort required to get the plant(crawling through our bushes, standing on your tip toes and grabbing the plant from our windowsill while our shades were open, or in the middle of the night when they'd be closed, and then running away) wouldn't be worth it.

And to be fair, they are still dicks for doing it. That was something we used to eat. And something that I need for dinner tonight. So I'm not really sorry that I think they are fucking pricks.

And Tania, that actually sounds pretty freaking adorable.

Emaline, the substance of the letter to the landlord sounds good, particularly how you've carefully detailed the specific incidents and complaints. The tone might encourage more animosity, though. If you started with something more neutral than your first sentence, and changed up the final paragraph, that would help a lot - saying "I do not want to start a war" has this subtext of "but I will if you don't step it up", and that's likely to breed animosity between you and the landlord. By the same token, you could possibly also delete things like the phrase "mind you", and replace "zero confidence" with "very little confidence". The sentence about the mother dying could be changed to, "I understand things happen and I also understand what it is like to lose someone so close and important to you, so of course a slight delay is completely understandable. However, I was assured things would still be taken care of eventually, but this still hasn't happened."
Good luck!
