Moon
« on: 09 Oct 2009, 20:55 »

Moon is a really good film directed by Duncan Jones (formerly known as Zowie Bowie). It features a terrific performance - two terrific performances, really - by Sam Rockwell, who's fast becoming one of my favourite movie actors.

Anyone else seen it?

Coming to...? It had a limited release in the United States around June or so; I saw it in Chicago. I think you might have to just wait for the DVD or whatever.

Excellent film.

I think it was only here for about a week or so, and me and my friends were the only people in the cinema when we went to see it.

Man, I love Sam Rockwell.

He'd been an "Oh hey, it's that guy again, whatisname" actor for me for a long time, but I started paying attention to him with the Assassination of Jesse James by an Awkwardly Long Movie Title (which in my opinion is one of the best movies of the decade, by the way). Now I'm actively taking an interest in his career and I can't wait to see what he does next.

It'd be worth backtracking and checking out Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. It's the movie that put him on my radar, a lot of people think it kinda sucks but I really dig it. Good performances, a little absurd, but a good film.

the movie that finally forced me to remember his name was Choke.

i'm a sucker for anything Chuck Palahniuk and even i thought Choke didn't look very good but when i finally watched it i was amazed. it's actually really good. check it out if you haven't seen it.

Oh, shit yeah! See, that's what I mean: I love that film, but if you hadn't reminded me that that guy in it was Sam Rockwell I never would've realised.

Moon is good but Sam Rockwell peaked with his performance as Eric Knox in Charlie's Angels.

Honestly, I love Sam Rockwell.

Rockwell on high school: "I just wanted to get stoned, flirt with girls, go to parties."

He delivered burritos by bicycle and worked as a private detective's assistant.

I like to think that these things have prepared him as a person for the awesome performance he gave in Moon.

Sounds like they're making a follow up to Moon called Mute. It's set in a futuristic Berlin, during the same timeline as Moon, where a mute bartender's female partner goes missing, leading to him going against the city’s gangsters to solve the mystery.

The saddest bit in Moon is when GERTY makes a  face.

SPOILERZ

I personally thought it was amazing how well they subverted the movie cliche (put heavily into your mind by the obvious 2001 comparisons) of computes being evil. When he comes up behind Sam whilst he's using the computer with that smile on his face, I was pretty certain he was going to attack him or something, but he just helps him. Similiarly when he puts his robotic hand on Sams shoulder to try and comfort him. The whole film could easily have been very melodramatic, but it actually managed to be pretty affecting for a number of reasons. The plot and science holes were understandable at least.

Finally saw it myself, and definitely agree this is an excellent movie and Sam Rockwell kicked ass with his performance. Really science fiction at its best when you deal with such fundamental issues like identity and humanity. And just fabulous small touches like seeing where the smiley faces had been erased on the metal wall. Even knowing the major first act twist beforehand, I had avoided enough spoilers where I wasn't sure where it was going, and I never really was able to guess.

There were a couple of elements that reminded me of my one published short story in a good way.
