I have only my grandfather's word to take for it, but if you have so much blood collecting under the nail that you have to poke through it, the pressure release feels a lot better. No mention was made of walking around for the next few months with a hole in one's thumbnail.

That's why you make the hole as far from the growing cuticle as possible. But seriously though, a hole in the nail is nothing compared to losing it completely.

I've lost nails like that a couple of times, but it was really nothing to worry about.
