motherfucking television sets
« on: 25 Feb 2010, 16:18 »

I am in the market for a new tv. A nice one.
I have pretty much narrowed down what I want, now I'm just looking for good brands and good prices.

Basically, I'm looking for: 1080p, 120hz, at least two HDMI inputs, and between 37 and 42 inches. The size isn't terribly important but everything else is mandatory.

I've checked all my local retailers (except Costco, that's on my To-Do-List) and the best deal I've found was at Best Buy. The only problem is that they only have the display model left and, with the additional warranty (don't wanna take any chances, ya know?), it comes a little too close to being all my money. On that note: I have almost exactly $1000 in my bank account and ideally I'd like to have two or three hundred left when it's all said and done (I realize that this is pushing it).

Amazon also has some decent deals but it keeps getting my hopes and dashing them. There was 37" LG that was pretty much perfect and the price said $559.99 or something and I thought "wow that's cheap" but then when I clicked on it said seven hundred and something instead so I was like "eff that" because that is more than the display model that I could pick up at Best Buy TODAY.

So, any glowing/seething recommendations/condemnations of brands/retailers you can give me, I would really appreciate it. Also, time is sort of a factor because there is a chance I will say "fuck it" and buy one today after work. But I'm not all that impulsive so I might not, it's hard to say. Thanks in advance.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

Oh hey, I am also looking for a new tv.

My boyfriend recently found a pretty sweet deal, but you have to act on it tonight, because it ends soon. When he gets home I'll post the link. I think it's only like $600.

Samsung, LG, Sony, or Sharp are personal favorites.  TBH, it's not that important.  At that price point, those brands are of all similar quality.  Go with what's on sale.

I got this TV for about $400 on sale around Thanksgiving. It's great but I'm not sure you can get that kind of deal nowadays.

Go with a Samsung or a Sharp, for sure. They've got the best quality-to-price ratio in my opinion. Sony sets are usually a little better, but nowhere near worth the price hike they have over other brands.

Sorry, I dropped the ball on posting that link, but since I'm also on the hunt, I'll be sure to send you anything I find. Have you tried http://slickdeals.net/ or http://www.logicbuy.com/ ? Both have pretty good deals on tvs regularly.

As for brands, my boyfriend seconds Samsung, and Sharp, and also says LG,

It's done. I went to Costco and they had a 37" Vizio for $629.

I set it up and it's awesome. I'm actually glad I got a 37 instead of a 40 or 42 because that would have been way too big. 37 is pretty much perfect for my tv viewing area.

Naturally, the first thing I did was watch The Dark Knight on BluRay. It was magical.

I picked up a 40 inch Sony Bravia for 1000 bucks near Christmas.  It makes me so ridiculously happy that it almost hurts. I used to have a 23 inch RCA that I picked up from Walmart.  That thing lasted me just a little over a year and I could not be happier with my upgrade.

I don't feel bad about somehow missing this thread considering that you got a Vizio-- I'm pretty high on those things, especially for the cost. A lot of Vizios have menus and remotes that are ugly as sin, but those menus usually make up for it by being dead easy to use, and really, who the hell gives a shit about how the menus look beyond initial setup? Half the people I know just get a DVR and use the remote that comes with that anyway, so the ugly clicker thing is hardly a big deal either. The pictures are fine, the units are cheap and last I heard their Consumer Reports surveys indicate they have around a failure rate in line that of with Sharp & Samsung, which are both pretty damn reliable brands.

Honestly, as long as you stay away from Mitsubishi and maybe Westinghouse, you'll probably be pretty alright. Mitsubishi in particular has been shitting out high-failure rate clunkers the last couple of years, which is too bad because they actually used to put out some really nice televisions, even if you did often have to go to a slightly more old-school tv and appliance store to find them.

Sony always have a slightly darker but alot richer picture colour wise. I am a sucker for samsung, LG are also good good panels.

The only thing I will say is go and actually see them compared in a shop, see what one you like the look of for the picture it gives. I never liked sharp :/

When I sold people TV's for a living I had more people walk out the shop because I was so brutally honest about the TV quality of some "goodmans" tv over a worthwhile TV to get purely because I would not sell someone something I would not be happy with in their situation. I didn't give a fuck abut my sales figures.
