Well.
Matthew, a friend of mine, bought a domain name and some hosting and put together a website about video games. He asked me and another friend of mine, Christian, to write for it. I waited until we had some content - or, to be honest, until
I had some content - to post about it. It's called
Vigigames, and once this fucking semester is done and all of my work is put aside I'll actually be writing several articles for it - one on depictions of Africa in games and one on religion in Bioware's games, as examples. In the meantime, I'll be contributing to biweekly podcasts, and blogging on rare occasions. The other dudes, Matthew in particular, churn out a decent amount of writing on a regular basis.
The big thing about the website is that we try to write, to varying degrees of success, on a more critical level. I don't mean that we're trying to do what Variety does/did, which is review everything all the goddamn time, but that we're people with academic backgrounds who are interested in culture and writing about an aspect of culture that they love. So there are reviews, but we've got an emphasis on things which more closely resemble short essays on various elements of the video game medium. We're hoping that'll distinguish us a bit, you know?
So there it is. I guess if you like it you can tell your friends or whatever, but I'm not trying to write this as an ad so much as I am trying to share with you guys something I'm proud to be a part of. We're still very much finding our footing, but I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoy doing it.
