Is it cold in here?:
Anyone else impressed at how healthy Hanners is being?
This isn't her hesitant "erm" when Marten and Steve were talking about "friggin' women" (1103), and this isn't channeling her mother (1108 for a tough love situation, 1418 for dealing with Marigold). She is being assertive like a skilled normal person, saying in effect "here's the situation, here's what I'm trying to do, here's how you're making it difficult".
Marigirl has just run into one of the traps of being a shy person. Without a diversified group of friends who complement each other, a shy person can expect too many kinds of interaction out of the first friendly person they encounter. The shy person can even mistake friendship for romance if the genders and orientations line up.
She doesn't even have good support from her guild. Remember her complaining that all the social attention went to the members who posted slutty pictures?
Heliphyneau:
The conversation/reactions between Hanners and Marigold make complete sense considering both of their emotional states and personalities. It's certainly gonna take Marigold more than a strip or two to 'get over' her disappointment. Hanners really is dealing with her OCD issues well -- maybe her concern for Marigold is providing enough of a focus for her to suppress her usual reactions (which likely doesn't fit the reality of OCD, but I can suspend a lil' disbelief for a good story). Maybe after Marbear's hangover is gone, Hanners can take her to karaoke to help her get over some shyness.
In the last panel, I really like the contrasts in expressions between Hannelore and Marigold vs the posters on the wall.

Insomniacs seek comfort? Or perhaps creatures of the night are more innocuous than one might expect.

--- Quote from: carvin on 05 Apr 2010, 09:30 ---Perhaps some kind of honesty on his part as to why he rejected her. Honestly, I'd like to know that too... I mean, if I was him I'd be all over that like a teabagger on a dollar. Likely it's because he likes Faye. If it's something else, well, he needs to own up to it (he doesn't see any future in it, she's not 'attractive' to him... honestly, I can't think of anything else, and these are lame...).
--- End quote ---
Why are those lame? If Angus isn't physically attracted to Marigold, that's not lame that's who he is. Just because he's not doesn't mean no one else is. If he doesn't see any future in it, why should he go for a relationship with her?
--- End quote ---
When faced with a situation where a girl was not what I expected (long distance, I was young) and not what I then thought was 'attractive'... I changed what I thought was attractive. A change that has lasted 10 years (not to mention, three relationships). I find the concept of rejecting a meaningful relationship because of someone not being attractive lame, to but it mildly. Then again, I have the same opinion when people would do the same because of gender... but that's another thing entirely. Besides, I remember now that he said she was pretty. I guess that's not the same as attractive, but I find it hard that one wouldn't stretch to the other.
As far as no future, it is in itself a good reason. The thing I think would be lame is that it's ridiculous. He's currently chasing a girl who isn't relationship stable, who doesn't necessarily have the ability to love him, there is nothing that would signal that they would be good together other than they enjoy arguing with each other (this isn't sarcasm; this is a good thing to have in a relationship. If you can enjoy the worst thing in a relationship, how bad can it get?). Marigold, on the other hand, seems perfectly capable of devotion, love (though she is likely naive of how love really works), has shown a desire to be flexible, whom he has been flexible with... I could go on.
tl;dr Carvin argues more than needed.
--- Quote ---From the info we've heard from Angus about his and Marigiold's relationship, I can see where Marigold as a romantic prospect has never crossed Angus' mind. My money is on him thinking of Marigold as a 'sister,' or, more likely, a 'kid' whom he really can't relate to. Though the fact that Faye seems to be thawing towards him can't be helping things.
--- End quote ---
I agree that he doesn't see her as such, but I would figure that a good part of that is because she's been so reserved and shy. And I certainly can see why when she threw herself at him that his reaction (other than 'Woo! Boobs!') was to say no: his reaction was to force himself not to do something he'd regret by processing as he always has. I would hope that after reflection he'd see the potential. I doubt that's what will happen, though.
I don't know if turning into you would be a bad thing... you at least have good taste in avatars.
Is it cold in here?:
Is it an obsolete and abandoned cultural idea that getting involved with roommates is a bad idea? If people on the forum believe it, they're not mentioning it.
Kugai:
Personally, I think Hanners and Marigold are actually more suited to each other than they recognise at this point. They are, in the broad terms, the antithesis of each other both personality wise as well as socially (despite her OCD Hanners does have a social life, more now since she met Marten, Faye and Dora). If the pair of them can get through this, and Hanners can get Marigold to come more out of her shell and actually start likeing herself more, I think the pair of them will actually be good for each other and could become good friends.
Whether anything else comes of that, time - and Jeph - will tell.
