Is there a back story to this webcomic artist rivalry I missed? Was I in the bathroom at the time?

Most webcomic artists I know cooperate and even willingly share characters, do filler comics for one another. It gets everyone's strips noticed by a larger audience, but this feels like a genuine "I want to see you die in a fire" hatefest.

Something like that was the introduction to a monday strip of both some time ago. It started there iirc.
