Carl-E:

--- Quote from: Eddurd on 06 May 2010, 16:25 ---Also "foreign", "neighbor", and "weight".

Weigh cool.

--- End quote ---

Other than foreign, they DO follow the "sounding like A" part of the rule.  In fact, neighbor and weigh are in the little rhyme...

jwhouk:
I before E, except after C, or except as an "a", as in neighbor and weigh.

And English is a funny language to begin with. Someone out there once posted a quote about German barmaids and English, but I'm not remembering it enough to throw it up here.

EDIT: Found it - "English is the result of Norman soldiers attempting to pick up Anglo-Saxon barmaids, and is no more legitimate than any of the other results." (H. Beam Piper, science fiction author)

The Duke:
Can't believe nobody's brought this up yet, but here goes...

"Teacher: I before E except after C and when sounding like A as in neighbour and weigh and on weekends and holidays and all throughout May you'll always be wrong no matter what you say!

Student: Whoa!  That's a, that's a harsh rule!"

-Brian Regan on school

Kugai:
Well, at least she didn't do her usual freakout - she just went the other way.

Progress I suppose.

akronnick:
everyone say it with me now:

D'aaaaaawwwwwwww!!!!!1!1!!!!
