Eric Dolphy was a critically-acclaimed jazz flautist. I'm not too familiar with his discography, but I know that he did a great collaboration with John Coltrane's quartet (which I can upload, if you like).

I knew there was something I was forgetting. I was going to recommend Moody Blues but their flute is more for ... ambience/psychedelic/world feelings than rocking out.

But try Focus.

I've always liked the flute on this song.  However, it's the only song of theirs with flute on it.
