Wow! That was pretty amazing. Not bad for a song with no staying-power...  :-D

Carl-E:
Well, that clinches it!

Fangus!

OTP, meant to be!

[ducks August's overripe tomatoes]

Now about the music...

We take the stuff that was pop when we grew up for granted.  It will always be fluff to us.  Personally, being a little older than Raoullefere, I can't understand why people like the BeeGees (didn't disco die?)

But nostalgia trends have a generation's delay, as kids discover their parent's music collections.  In the 70's all the nostalgia was for the 50's (Happy Days just led the trend).  And Disco did have a bit of a revival through the 90's.  So these current 20-somethings were looking back in their teen years to... the 80's.

I know, it's a bit sad, really.  But I sorta liked Africa when I heard it on the radio back then, too.

Couldn't understand most of it, but the emotions clicked.

Don't worry, it doesn't make it a classic.  This nostalgia too, will pass.  My younger daughter was quite taken with Cyndi Lauper a couple of years ago...

HiFranc:
Carl, you've now got Girls Just Want to have Fun stuck in my head.  I'm trying to use True Colors and Time After Time to shift it. ;-)

The Fangus shipper in me squeeed today.

Actually her newest blues-based album's pretty good...

(Looks around and hopes that the ghost of Howlin' Wolf doesn't whale the tar out of him)

I must have missed the big '80s revival in the '00s. This isn't the first time I've heard there was one, but I never saw it. Also, "Africa" is famous enough that they could have discovered it without looking for it or ever hearing any of their other work. I assume they're not the sort to say they like the band without actually listening to any of their other stuff after that though.

Also, I just discovered that subliminal messages work. I skimmed over your post and without even consciously reading the words "Cyndi Lauper", "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" started playing in my head.

...You owe me a new head.
