I have never heard it used as an adjective.

As an adjective it is a synonym to "sundry". As in, "Of the sundry and myriad options, the most practical was the first". Or whatever.

I always saw it as a synonym to "many"- just lots of many. Many many.

Well, yes, but it also implies a variety, I think.
