LTK:
Pressure plates give me the same problem as buttons. When I install them, they automatically flip the door open, so every time I step on the pressure plate or push the button, the door momentarily closes. Maybe this is a problem with iron doors. I haven't used switches on other objects yet.
Scandanavian War Machine:
put a pressure plate on both sides and walk back and forth through a couple of times. It might work itself out.
I set up a pair of metal double doors, each with it's own switch, and they were wonky as fuck until I hit them a couple of times each and then they sorted themselves out and worked perfectly.

You have to use a redstone torch I think.

A helpful tutorial, but alas, doors in combination with switches are simply fucked, so I'm going back to wooden doors.
