I'll want a spot as well. I like the idea about death or one week, gives a certain flair of danger. I'll probably be playing on hard, to make stuff interesting.
One of the first thing this world will need is a forest, since, guys, damn we're going to need a lot of wood for signposts. I tried to mark all my cave sideshafts with "mined out" or "not mined out", and those ran out so fast you have no idea.
LTK:
I use a redstone code for that! Had it on a piece of paper somewhere, but I can't find it right now...
I think I still remember what it was. When I'm exploring deep caves I often pick up redstone along the way, and since I don't use it for anything I just put some on the floor as markings. For finding the way out, I make the symbol ┤ at intersections, where the bottom always points to where I came from. A square marks a vital exit point, because the times that I do get lost, I often walk right past the exit without realizing it. Dead ends that are already explored are marked by a single redstone +.
I haven't actually used the code in a while because I've been spelunking long enough to be able to imprint landmarks (cavemarks?) instataneously, but maybe it'll be useful for you.

Screenshots of the world map alone won't make much of a story, so I was also thinking of keeping a small day-to-day diary with your impressions. It would be interesting to see everyone's individual thoughts on the world at the very end.
I don't know if SirJuggles has managed to survive so far, but the week ahead is fairly quiet for me, so I'd like to pick up the world as the second player.

I figured that when my turn came around I would just do what we did for Dwarf Fortress, come up with a little narrative of our actions as we move along. Injecting whatever type of personality into it that you want, you know, like humor, horror, whatnot.
SirJuggles:
I started up a world on Friday on the train home and got started. I have my version of a little safe home for now, and I'm working on a "trail of breadcrumbs" leading to it from the spawn point. It's a bit of a walk, and I'm sure someone will come up with a better solution later. I was gonna work on it some more on the train today but I just found the campaign mode in Dawn of War: Dark Crusade =( I'll probably play a bit more over the course of this week, and if I die at any point then I'll zip it together and post the link. If I survive till Friday I think I'll put all my stuff in chests, leave some signs behind, and see how many mobs I can take in one night before they get me.
Also, I've taken a few screenshots so far and left a few signposts around but nothing too interesting yet.

Ah if you were hoping for it this week then I can probably finish it up after my midterm on Tuesday evening.
