Okay so I've got magma, and I've got a bucket, but so far the way to get one into the other has not come to me

I think you're supposed to be able to just right click on the water or lava with the bucket in hand in order to fill it?

It has to be a lava /source/ to be put into a bucket.  I think that means you have to find where the lava's flowing from, not the lava that is flowing.  (the source should be the highest point of lava in a lava stream)

LTK:
I made the mistake of using five iron ingots for a bucket, but that makes a minecart. If you haven't made that mistake, the bucket only works on standing lava, or lava sources, like isaiah says.
