I'm going to go with the airport was in on it or (a blanket) Australia is less paranoid than the US.

Lunchbox:
Yeah you just get them off the internet, you can put in whatever name. Last time we went they just checked one person's ID and said 'So are these the other people listed to be travelling with you?' and that was it. That was for domestic travel though.

Inlander:
Dude you can check yourself in online for a domestic flight in Australia and print out the boarding pass at home and get straight on the plane and never once will you have to show anyone any ID or in any way prove who you are.

Lunchbox:
We did! I guess we had to check a piece of luggage which is when they checked our boarding pass.

Inlander:
Pfft I can't remember the last time I had to show ID on a domestic flight and I check luggage all the time.

EDIT: Maybe it's just Virgin Blue who are lax? I don't generally fly with anyone else because Tiger's, well, it's Tiger, and Jetstar doesn't fly to Canberra which is usually where I'm going.
