Cats do seem to want to die alone. I've known a few people who have had elderly cats up and vanish one day. Sometimes they're found in the next couple days dead (apparently from natural causes) hidden in a shed, or in some obscure corner of the garden. Sometimes they just are gone.
GarandMarine:
I know what fish need at all times....
Breading, lemon and a little tartar sauce.
Papersatan:
but some do not.
(Edit: cats being alone, not fish and breading)
warning sad story:
(click to show/hide)About 10 years ago, Stephen and I lived with my best friend, and she had this little cat, Jade. Jade was maybe a year and a half old when one day she stopped eating. She found a spot in a corner and started spending all day there, refusing to move unless she needed to use the litter box. The other cat would come and lick her, which was notable because they didn't get along. We took her to the vet and found we couldn't even begin to afford treatment to stabilize her, let alone to diagnose or treat her. We brought her home and spent the next few days gathering up the money to have her put down. On the day of her appointment Stephen was the only one home. She started crying, and got up from her corner struggling to walk. She only quieted down when Stephen held her, and when he put her down she started yowling again, so he just lay down on the sofa with her on his chest. She curled up and went to sleep. At one point she peed on him, but he just let her lay there until I came home to get them for the appointment. I think her time was coming, appointment or no, and she wanted the comfort of a person with her.
