The argument is (in the UK, at any rate) that payment demonstrates your commitment, and so gives them more confidence in the welfare of the dog in your hands; when we got Polly six years ago, it was £100.  In the UK, the Dog's Trust will then pick up the cost of spaying (or do it for you free) if you take a puppy that is too young to have been done at that time.

My one cat is very good at helping me study.

My other cat, not so much.

They are both good at lazing about like kitty puddles, however.

Whoa that's a unusual kitten right there
I forgot to mention, he also has a belly button that we need to get removed when we get him snipped.

1. Sleeping

2. Eating.  In this case licking grease off my finger

3. Attack!!

I visited my mom for Thanksgiving and Parker was so stoked when he realized I was actually spending the night. I miss my kitty and his sleepy snuggles. :c I kind of want to adopt a kitten from one of my friends, but I kind of just want my cat...

It might have something to do with the fact that I grew up in the ghetto, but none of the shelters I have ever seen will let you take an animal out the door without getting it fixed. My sister adopted a kitten (5 years ago now) when it was 10 weeks old. They refused to hold him until he was old enough, even though my parents offered to pay them for kennel service, and they refused to let us take him home without getting him fixed. 5 years later and he is about 2/3 his proper size, his head is small and triangly, he has abandonment issues, he sucks on sweaters and things, drools when he sleeps, and is afraid of absolutely everything.

I do think it is bollocks, but at the same time I know quite a lot of people in my neighborhood who wouldn't ever go back to get their pet fixed if the shelter just let them walk out the door with it. I suppose there is not much else they can do, really.

Yay fuzzy things! I have so many for your enjoyment.

This is my kitten Eddie. He is all grown up and has a new home now - one of our cats wasn't fixed and then it had babies (no shit man.. my mother apparently thought this couldn't happen) and then they grew up and went to other homes a year or so ago. He had that disorder that made him walk like he was drunk. Sweetest little guy ever.

This is Yuki. My boyfriend and I just adopted him a couple months ago, after moving into our own place. He's a fatty fat fat. I am not a small girl and he takes up my entire lap, whether or not I want him to.

The next pics are kinda big, so clicky the thumbnail for the full size.

This is Bella. Cutest little butt in town. Being eaten by a shark.

This is Elvis. He was recently put to sleep because of complications of a surgery that should never have happened :( He was my fat little fuzzy man.

This is Waffle. Being eaten by an alligator!

Inky. She's a jerk!

Pedro. Absolute sweetheart.

And a gratuitous shot of a pile of ferrets.

They refused to hold him until he was old enough, even though my parents offered to pay them for kennel service, and they refused to let us take him home without getting him fixed.

The Dog's Trust (a national UK charity) let us take the puppy, but insisted it must spayed within six months.  When we told them that our vet refuses to spay until after the first season, they got quite aggressive in chasing us up to get it done - but we stood our ground.

Ohhh kittythread.

Here is fatty Mamacat! She's super pregnant here, but has gotten just as fat after having her kittens because she eats anything vaguely resembling food.

Her babies are Rorschach (stripey one) and Panda (b&w)- they are a bit less than a year old now and less cute I assume, but they are at their new homes now and this is how I remember them:)

And finally, my favorite of them all, Coronita. She is LOUD and loving and insane.

We officially have a kitten! One of my roommates, Justin, was over at a friend's for his weekly D&D game and said friend had found a tiny kitten outside of his house. There was no sign of a mom anywhere, so he tried to take it to a shelter, but none of them are taking in kittens right now. (Read: It would be put down if he left it at a shelter.) So he took it back home, Justin saw it at the game and was all d'aww over it and sent his gf, my other roommate Chelsey, a text with a picture asking if we wanted to take it in. We were equally d'aww, so we said yes. So now we have a kitten that's about 6 weeks old who is super adorable and rolly polly who is now named Rorschach, or Rory for short. (We don't know what sex it is, but it's black and white and we wanted a comic book name.) Or as I like to call him Rorschach (Rory) Rolly Polly Chubsy Malone.

Here's Rory:

Here's Chelsey holding him (shortly after this he passed out in that exact position):

Good Dog Nigel

Arf, Arf, he goes, a merry sight
Our little hairy friend
Arf, Arf, upon the lampost bright
Arfing round the bend.
Nice dog! Goo' boy,
Waggie tail and beg,
Clever Nigel, jump for joy
Because we are putting you to sleep at three of the clock, Nigel.

These are actually my sister's cats, not mine, but they're too cute not to share.

The white one is Toast and the black one is Dog.  Unfortunately Toast died about a year ago  so my sister got Panda to keep Dog company.

Panda and Dog

Panda yawns with her eyes open so it looks like she's screaming.  It's pretty hilarious.

Oh crap, I didn't even notice! It's only Thunderdome/Highlander if the other Rorschach is also called Rory. We'll probably mostly call it Rory, especially if it ends up being a girl.

Yeah, I was like, "Whatever, I can deal with a sad pet video.  HEART OF STEEL!"

Then it started, and I was like, "This is super mawkish.  And it's ten minutes long... no way am I sitting through this whole thing."

Then two minutes later I was crying.  And of course I sat through the whole thing.

That video honestly didnt make me emotional...probably because I muted it after reading it was soo sad.  But one of the "related videos" was this one and i teared up a bit.

My roommates renamed the cat Harley Quinn because today we found out that the kitten is a girl and Rorschach is "too manly", even though we decided we'd call it Rory if it were a girl. I am disappoint. Oh wells. Probably still call it Rory. It's not my cat, so I'll confuse it if I like!

The Naming Of Cats by T. S. Eliot

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey--
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter--
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum-
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover--
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

My mom signs gifts for me with her cat's name ("Spook") rather than "Mom."

I think she thinks it's cute?

(But it actually just kind of makes her look a little nuts.)

(Emails like this don't help, either: "All Utopian Goals and Dreams will elude humankind until a Massive Collective Alteration in State of Consciousness occurs.  Mass Enlightenment will allow Earthly Paradise to Manifest!  ie The solution is Spiritual!"  Oh, Mom.)

The Naming Of Cats by T. S. Eliot

The Death of a Cat, by Louis MacNeice

I

Since then, those months ago, these rooms miss something,
A link, a spark, and the street down there reproves
My negligence, particularly the gap
For the new block which, though the pile of timber
Is cleared on which he was laid to die, remains
A gap, a catch in the throat, a missing number.

You were away when I lost him, he had been absent
Six nights, two dead, which I had not learnt until
You returned and asked and found how he had come back
To a closed door having scoured the void of Athens
For who knows what and at length, more than unwell
Came back and less than himself, his life in tatters.

Since when I dislike that gap in the street and that obdurate
Dumb door of iron and glass and I resent
This bland blank room like a doctor's consulting room
With its too many exits, all of glass and frosted,
Through which he lurked and fizzed, a warm retort,
Found room for his bag of capers, his bubbling flasket.

For he was our puck, our miniature lar, he fluttered
Our dovecot of visiting cards, he flicked them askew,
The joker among them who made a full house. As you said,
He was a fine cat. Though how strange to have, as you said later,
Such a personal sense of loss. And looking aside
You said, but unconvincingly: What does it matter?

II

To begin with he was a beautiful object:
Blue crisp fur with a white collar,
Paws of white velvet, springs of steel,
A Pharaoh's profile, a Krishna's grace,
Tail like a questionmark at a masthead
And eyes dug out of a mine, not the dark
Clouded tarns of a dog's, but cat's eyes -
Light in a rock crystal, light distilled
Before his time and ours, before cats were tame.

To continue, he was alive and young,
A dancer, incurably male, a clown,
With his gags, his mudras, his entrechats,
His triple bends and his double takes,
Firm as a Rameses in African wonderstone,
Fluid as Krishna chasing the milkmaids,
Who hid under carpets and nibbled at olives,
Attacker of ankles, nonesuch of nonsense,
Indolent, impudent, cat catalytic.

To continue further: if not a person
More than a cipher, if not affectionate
More than indifferent, if not volitive
More than automaton, if not self-conscious
More than mere conscious, if not useful
More than a parasite, if allegorical
More than heraldic, if man-conditioned
More than a gadget, if perhaps a symbol
More than a symbol, if somewhat a proxy
More than a stand-in - was what he was!
A self-contained life, was what he must be
And is not now: more than an object.

And is not now. Spreadeagled on coverlets -
Those are the coverlets, bouncing on chairbacks -
These are the chairs, pirouetting and sidestepping,
Feinting and jabbing, breaking a picture frame -
Here is the picture, tartar and sybarite,
One minute quicksilver, next minute butterballs,
Precise as a fencer, lax as an odalisque,
And in his eyes the light from the mines
One minute flickering, steady the next,
Lulled to a glow or blown to a blaze,
But always the light that was locked in the stone
Before his time and ours: at best semi-precious
All stones of that kind yet, if not precious,
Are more than stones, beautiful objects
But more than objects. While there is light in them.

III

Canyons of angry sound, catastrophe, cataclysm,
Smells and sounds in cataracts, cat-Athens,
Not, not the Athens we know, each whisker buzzing
Like a whole Radar station, typhoons of grapeshot,
Crossfire from every roof of ultra-violet arrows
And in every gutter landmines, infra-red,
A massed barrage of too many things unknown
On too many too quick senses (cossetted senses
Of one as spoilt as Pangur Ban, Old Foss
Or My Cat Jeoffrey), all the drab and daily
Things to him deadly, all the blunt things sharp,
Whose street cries consecrate their loaves and fishes
And huge black chessmen carved out of old priests
And steatopygous boys, they all were Gogs and Magogs
With seven-league battering boots and hair-on-ending voices
Through which he had to dodge. And all the wheels
Of all the jeeps, trucks, trams, motor-bicycles, buses, sports cars,
Caught in his brain and ravelled out his being
To one high horrible twang of breaking catgut,
A swastika of lightning. Such was Athens
To this one indoors cat, searching for what
He could not grasp through what he could not bear,
Dragged to and fro by unseen breakers, broken
At last by something sudden; then dragged back
By his own obstinate instinct, a long dark thread
Like Ariadne's ball of wool in the labyrinth
Not now what he had played with as a kitten
But spun from his own catsoul, which he followed
Now that the minotaur of machines and men
Had gored him, followed it slowly, slowly, until
It snapped a few yards short of a closed door,
Of home, and he lay on his side like a fish on the pavement
While the ball of wool rolled back down the hill,
His purpose gone, only his pain remaining
Which, even if purpose is too human a word,
Was not too human a pain for a dying cat.

IV

Out of proportion? Why, almost certainly.
You and I, darling, knew no better
Than to feel worse for it. As one feels worse
When a tree is cut down, an ear-ring lost,
A week-end ended, a child at nurse
Weaned. Which are also out of proportion.

Sentimentality? Yes, it is possible:
You and I, darling, are not above knowing
The tears of the semi-, less precious things,
A pathetic fallacy perhaps, as the man
Who gave his marble victory wings
Was the dupe - who knows - of sentimentality.

Not really classic. The Greek Anthology
Laments its pets (like you and me, darling),
Even its grasshoppers; dead dogs bark
On the roads of Hades where poets hung
Their tiny lanterns to ease the dark.
Those poets were late though. Not really classical.

Yet more than an object? Why, most certainly.
You and I, darling, know that sonatas
Are more than sound and that green grass
Is more than grass or green, which is why
Each of our moments as they pass
Is of some moment; more than an object.

So this is an epitaph, not for calamitous
Loss but for loss; this was a person
In a small way who had touched our lives
With a whisk of delight, like a snatch of a tune
From which one whole day's mood derives.
For you and me, darling, this is an epitaph.

Excerpt from Jubilate Agno, by Christopher Smart

For I will consider my cat Jeoffrey.
For he is the servant of the Living God, duly and daily serving him.
For at the First glance of the glory of God in the East he worships in his way.
For is this done by wreathing his body seven times round with elegant quickness.
For then he leaps up to catch the musk, which is the blessing of God upon his prayer.
For he rolls upon prank to work it in.
For having done duty and received blessing he begins to consider himself.
For this he performs in ten degrees.
For first he looks upon his fore-paws to see if they are clean.
For secondly he kicks up behind to clear away there.
For thirdly he works it upon stretch with the fore-paws extended.
For fourthly he sharpens his paws by wood.
For fifthly he washes himself.
For sixthly he rolls upon wash.
For seventhly he fleas himself, that he may not be interrupted upon the beat.
For eighthly he rubs himself against a post.
For ninthly he looks up for his instructions.
For tenthly he goes in quest of food.
For having consider’d God and himself he will consider his neighbor.
For if he meets another cat he will kiss her in kindness.
For when he takes his prey he plays with it to give it a chance.
For one mouse in seven escapes by his dallying.
For when his day’s work is done his business more properly begins.
For he keeps the Lord’s watch in the night against the adversary.
For he counteracts the powers of darkness by his electrical skin & glaring eyes.
For he counteracts the Devil, who is death, by brisking about the life.
For in his morning orisons he loves the sun and the sun loves him.
For he is of the tribe of Tiger.
For the Cherub Cat is a term of the Angel Tiger.
For he has the subtlety and hissing of a serpent, which in goodness he suppresses.
For he will not do destruction, is he is well fed, neither will he spit without provocation.
For he purrs in thankfulness, when God tells him he’s a good cat.
For he is an instrument for the children to learn benevolence upon.
For every house is incomplete without him and a blessing is lacking in the spirit.
For the Lord commanded Moses concerning the cats at the departure of the Children of Israel from Egypt.
For every family had one cat at least in the bag.
For the English cats are the best in Europe.
For he is the cleanest in the use of his fore-paws of any quadrupede.
For the dexterity of his defence is an instance of the love of God to him exceedingly.
For he is the quickest to his mark of any creature.
For he is tenacious of his point.
For he is a mixture of gravity and waggery.
For he knows that God is his Saviour.
For there is nothing sweeter than his peace when at rest.
For there is nothing brisker than his life when in motion.
For he is of the Lord’s poor and so indeed is he called by benevolence perpetually — Poor Jeoffrey! poor Jeoffrey! the rat has bit thy throat.
For I bless the name of the Lord Jesus that Jeoffrey is better.
For the divine spirit comes about his body to sustain it in complete cat.
For his tongue is exceedingly pure so that it has in purity what it wants in music.
For he is docile and can learn certain things.
For he can set up with gravity which is patience upon approbation.
For he can fetch and carry, which is patience in employment.
For he can jump over a stick which is patience upon proof positive.
For he can spraggle upon waggle at the word of command.
For he can jump from an eminence into his master’s bosom.
For he can catch the cork and toss it again.
For he is hated by the hypocrite and miser.
For the former is afraid of detection.
For the latter refuses the charge.
For he camels his back to bear the first notion of business.
For he is good to think on, if a man would express himself neatly.
For he made a great figure in Egypt for his signal services.
For he killed the Ichneumon-rat very pernicious by land.
For his ears are so acute that they sting again.
For from this proceeds the passing quickness of his attention.
For by stroking of him I have found out electricity.
For I perceived God’s light about him both wax and fire.
For the electrical fire is the spiritual substance, which God sends from heaven to sustain the bodies both of man and beast.
For God has blessed him in the variety of his movements.
For, though he cannot fly, he is an excellent clamberer.
For his motions upon the face of the earth are more than any other quadrupede.
For he can tread to all the measures upon the music.
For he can swim for life.
For he can creep.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."

I don't think naming a cat matters because they don't really ever respond to being called anyways.

Same with dogs.  My father-in-law took his dog on to Hampstead Heath one day, and to prove a point, when he wanted it to come back he shouted "Income Tax"; the dog came.

Yes they do... Or maybe my cats have all been like super smart or something. (One maybe, the other doubtful.) But both recognize their names and know what "no" means. Also Parker knows to stop biting me if I say "ow" and looks at me with a sad face. (Waffles didn't care if you were in pain, because he wanted to rip off your face whether you liked it or not.)

Whats with all these words, people? Where is my daily fix of adorable?

Also, my cats always end up with like 50 names. There's the name they were given when we got the cat (if everyone agrees - if not, everyone seems to choose their own name for it), then there's the usual nickname, then there's a bunch of variants on the name and the nickname. Same goes for our ferrets. Most nicknames have the words butt, stinky, or pants involved.

Except Yuki, who we've been calling cat-man-doo lately.

Dude, my cat totally comes to me when I call him, or if I am already nearby he will at least look over and make eye contact with me. Also, there are two other cats at my parents' house, and if I ask him a few times where Nabisco or Spike is and start looking for them, he will totally go searching for them himself and then, when he finds them, he will come back with them.

My cat is pretty awesome.

Cat! who hast pass'd thy grand climacteric,
How many mice and rats hast in thy days
Destroy'd? -- How many tidbits stolen? Gaze
With those bright languid segments green, and prick
Those velvet ears -- but pr'ythee do not stick
Thy latent talons in me -- and upraise
Thy gentle mew -- and tell me all thy frays
Of fish and mice, and rats and tender chick.
Nay, look not down, nor lick thy dainty wrists --
For all the wheezy asthma, -- and for all
Thy tail's tip is nick'd off -- and though the fists
Of many a maid have given thee many a maul,
Still is that fur as soft as when the lists
In youth thou enter'dst on glass-bottled wall

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

I call our kitten Poopy Paws more than anything else. And Smelly Butt. She's a cute little fluff ball, but she needs to learn how to move around in her litterbox because i'm pretty sure she's tired of wet wipes cleaning off her paws and butt a few times a day.

When you tell a cat "No", what they understand are the tone used and the body language. Pretty straight up for mammals.
