Vowels are sounds; we have five letters (aeiou) that always represent vowel sounds, and one (y) that sometimes does and sometimes doesn't. I have consistently counted y as a vowel when representing a vowel, and not when representing a consonant.

right, just so everyone is like totally clear: "yr" has its origins in beat culture, making it one of the few things which is actually straight-up, unequivocally hipster in origin.
