It is everything you want it to be.

Mostly I figure it's better than making a new thread for every dead dude or lady plus being able to mention folks who died who might not warrant a full thread on their own (like, say, Gerry Rafferty) plus it'll be a solid reminder that 2011 sucks just like last year did and next year will.
