Anime anyone?
pwhodges:
Neon Genesis Evangelion went up on Netflix this morning. There are new subtitles and dub. I quite liked the old dub, but, from my sampling, this is seriously better. I like some of the phasing I've seen in the subs, too - but they don't sub many screen elements you might expect them to, which I haven't decided about yet.
It would seem that the rights holders for the ending song, Fly me to the Moon, got greedy, because a different song (from the series) has been substituted for it, at least in the English version - I understand that in Japan it's still there. A shame - after all, it was there in the previous English release!

(click to show/hide)Am informed that when Kaworu tells Shinji "It means I love you" near the end, the subs translate it as "I like you."
pwhodges:
The Japanese word "suki" is best translated as "like", not "love". In Japan the words for love ("ai", "koi") are used at a later stage in a relationship; suki is used for one's crush, or by a mother for a child (a mother's love is not the same as romantic love).
The translator in this case is Dan Kanemitsu, who is Khara's in-house English translator. He has responded to talk about this on twitter, explaining that the ambiguity of "like" (which can mean "like like") is intentional, and is how it comes across in Japanese. See his replies to this tweet:

There is some discussion of these words here.

--- Quote from: Theta9 on 15 Dec 2018, 07:22 ---I've been trading CDs with my new friend at work, and he's been giving me a preponderance of jazz music. A few days ago I lent him the first Cowboy Bebop OST and he loved it; after hearing the rest he ordered both OST 1 and the movie OST from Amazon.
Yesterday I gave him the first DVD of the teevee series. He's on vacation until January 2 so he's got some time to watch it.
(Data points: he's a 52-year-old man from Argentina. I'm a 49-year-old white American from California.)

UPDATE: friend made it through the first 5 episodes before deciding it was too racist for him (the three old men being Mexican stereotypes, and also Punch.) Elected not to continue watching, and returned the DVD.
RedWolf4:
On the topic of the NGE Netflix script changes I saw something doing the rounds on tumblr about some of the other scenes. For Example. . . .
From the original dub
From the new netflix dub
Dunno if this is legit or some sort of weird ass false flag crap.
