Well, this was probably a one-off strip, I hope they don't continue pursuing the awkwardness nor try to defeat it, and just let it slide into the oblivion it deserves.

But, there's something interesting in the Marten-Faye-Mama triangle here...

Marten's usually pretty good at picking up on cues, and empathizing with people (he has his blind spots, and Dora's insecurities was one of them, but I digress).  But here, he totally misses Faye's incredulity at his mohter's comment.  Clearly, Faye disagreed with Ms. Reed's assessment (what that says about Faye is another matter).

Instead, Marten (without putting much real  thought into it, he only just heard the idea) sees his mother's point of view.

If I had a nickel for every argument I've had with my wife where my mother's point of view (or comments) was at the root of it... well, I'd have quite a few nickels.  This isn't a blind spot because he's close to the issue; this is one relationship being overridden by another!  And laughing it off nervously?  Not  a smooth move.

And I think that's where the awkwardness comes in.  Better to just let it die a natural death.  Somebody should suggest going out for waffles or something....

Antario:
it'd have to be pretty ridiculous waffles then....

themacnut:
Well, if there was any chance at all of the Marten-Faye ship limping to port, Marten's offhand comment just blew that chance out of the water. That ship is now on it's way to the bottom of a deep ocean trench. In pieces.

They'll be lucky if they can maintain a decent friendship after this.

Faye: audience avatar. Hannelore: not so much. Really nice? Really? REAALLLYYY!?  :psyduck:

I wonder if they have tea in those mugs. Tea... with sugar.

Back to Faye, at least part of her incredulity is because she already had one of those relationships - with Sven.

Oh, hell no.  If a friendship can't withstand a little awkwardness, it wasn't much of a friendship in the first place!  Their friendship's built on more than the underlying sexual tension/attraction they had for one another at the beginning.  If that were all there were, then yes, this would've torpedoed it.  This is nothing more than some choppy seas.
