CEOIII:
Well, Marten made his dumb comment (the one that got him dropped) after an entire bottle of bourbon. A few beers will probably keep his mouth in check.

(Something I wondered about that comic: How many times did Faye hit him? His ribs and his head hurt.)

Somnus Eternus:
Awww...

For the record, I don't think Faye's sadface is so much about actual feelings for Marten as it is about getting her ego bruised.  Let's be honest - if there was a guy/girl you once had a chance with but turned down, and then years later that guy/girl, whom you do not feel romantically toward, said what Marten said just then?  That'd sting a little, only because they used to think you were awesome, but apparently not so much anymore.

Their friendship will survive this.  I doubt the awkwardness will even last to the end of the week; that would be kind of weird.

There has been way too much out-of-character stuff in QC lately. The reason people can't fathom why Veronica would do or say certain things, or why Marten makes an awkward and crude comment to Faye today, or why Hanners responds to Veronica's visit positively despite Veronica's rudeness is that the characters have not been very contiguous from one day to the next in the recent strips. Jeph has built engaging characters but they are becoming fragmented as a result of too much time being spent on minute moments in the QC world. That's why it's difficult to reconcile characters' actions with their past appearances; good characters don't require mental gymnastics of their readers.

Personally, I think the best thing that could happen in the strip would be a quick close to the current arc, a couple weeks spent looking at peripheral characters we haven't seen in a long time, and a resumption with the main cast with a jump in QC time of at least two months. The storytelling potential of "Two Months Later" would refresh the characters, give Jeph a chance to change things without explaining them instantly, and allow him to drop hints about the QC-world's closure to the current storyline, slowly revealing the aftermath of the breakup. Sort of an in media res thing.

Anyway, I'll be interested to see how Jeph resolves this storyline.

Emperor Norton:
I just have to reply to say 2 things.

1. I don't think the characters are acting out of character, so whatever on that one.

2. Do you guys REALLY have friends who are such delicate flowers? Every time I come on the forums its about how hurt and how someone is going to lose a friend or whatever over ONE joke comment or honest assessment. I mean seriously... Faye is going to stop being friends over THAT comment after she just ignored(Postbeatinghimintheheadofcourse) his drunken lunge? Or she isn't going to talk to him for a couple of months? Seriously why are some of you even suggesting these things...
