Open GL + Diablo II
« on: 02 Aug 2011, 23:49 »

I just installed Diablo II (patched to current) on my mbp and I'm trying to get it runing in OpenGL mode instead of software. When I select this graphic option, the game crashes with a black screen and no sound but I can still move the mouse around and use the function keys. Seeing as this game is practically anceint, I should be able to run this on my 2011 2.7GHz 13". Any ideas on a fix?

Play it on an older Mac?  My best guess is that Diablo 2 probably joined a list of programs that stopped working on OS X when Apple made the switch to Intel processors.  The only other reason I could think of is that the drivers for that video card might not have working legacy support for Diablo 2 anymore.

D2 is totally killed as of 10.7, you can patch it and then only run it in software color mode up until 10.6, but after 10.7 you would have to bootcamp probably.

If you liked the Diablo II style of gameplay (and if you're into mythology and ancient history), I recommend picking up Titan Quest and it's expansion, the Immortal Throne. In my opinion it's taken everything from D2 and improved upon it. it also works with pretty much every updated system, be it PC or laptop, and from what I can tell it's just fine on Macs.

Also, many of the people from the developers are now working on a game called Grim Dawn. Though Diablo III is likely to be released before it, I wouldn't doubt that it'd make for some serious competition.

So they've found a way to improve upon clicking your mouse a bunch? Neat.

The only major improvement that D2 needs is inventory stacking but Torchlight has that covered.

Runs fine on Windows Vista (though you need to 'Run as Admin' for it to load properly)

Run it on 1.09; no overpowered runewords, no guest monsters in Act V, and no hammerdins or Enigma.

Though admittedly, I wouldn't mind running through Chaos Sanc as a melee char and not have to play chicken with Iron Miaden-casting oblivion knights.
