So my accommodation for my first three nights in San Francisco has fallen through, can anyone recommend a reasonably priced hotel/motel near the city or Castro?

Youth hostels can be! I think when I stayed in SF in '06 I got a bed for $20something/night. In retrospect I may have been in the Tenderloin, now that I think about it...
