My favorite's the British first edition of Moby Dick - the one where the publisher forgot the afterward (after word?) that explained how Ishmail survives.  Caused critics to pan the book, and even though it was corrected in later American editions, Melville never saw decent sales before he passed away...

I was about to be raging but then I remembered I just said I wanted the QC Volume 2 for Christmas. It hasn't actually been ordered yet. Huzzah!
