Gav, it's basically our equivalent of state-supported student loans. In my case, I'll be paying them off for a long time and I only did Arts - a medicine or law degree at some Aussie universities now costs upward of $100K :psyduck:

The really awesome thing is, the politicians who put HECS in place didn't have to pay a cent for their degrees.
