A friend of mine who used to lecture was told by his supervisor that the most embarrassing thing is to lecture with your flies undone.  So he developed this habit of checking his flies as he steps onto the stage...  He's quite unconscious of it now.

I was a newspaper reporter when the local cable channel asked me to interview an author. The interview went well enough, but when I watched it, I saw myself wrinkling my nose, far too often. It's not ordinarily a nervous habit, but it was for the duration of that interview.
And yes, a casual observer might see me check my fly on the way into a building. Or at least look down at my fly. But that's a good response to getting more forgetful about it in the last 10 years. Women in my workplace, I recall, were often looking down at themselves. At what, I don't think I ever learned, or even asked about.
