But who wants to be the parent of a 25-year-old toddler? If you're still treating a 13-year-old as a little kid, at what point do you take the nappies (diapers) off?

It's not a new phenomenon, all this mollycoddling, though more universal than it once was; how much it matters is not clear, though I strongly disapprove of it.
For example, the violinist Yehudi Menuhin was not allowed to cross the road alone, or to use a telephone, until after his eighteenth birthday - however, before then he had performed Bach, Beethoven and Brahms concerti in Berlin, made his seminal recording of Elgar's Violin Concerto with the composer conducting, and started on the first ever complete recording of the solo violin works of Bach. So it didn't exactly hold him back.
