You think this is better than the Solti recordings?

pwhodges:
How do you judge between a supreme studio recording and a supreme live one?

The Solti is better recorded; the care they took over effects was remarkable; some of the principal singers were just past their prime (Hotter in particular).  Solti had never conducted the work in the theatre when the recording was made; and the parts were recorded over many years.

Keilberth is not necessarily better than Krauss, Knappertsbusch or Furtwängler, but he is as good (and the singers found him the best to sing with).  No studio performance ever quite achieves the sense of continuity and balance that a live performance can have.

On the whole I prefer listening to live performances, but not everyone does.  I found my first time listening to Keilberth simply more compelling then either Solti or Barenboim (my previous preference, recorded at Bayreuth, but without an audience); I think the sung performances were the main reason.

Not part of this judgement; but with my recording engineer's hat on, I feel that the Culshaw's work, though well done, opened the door for many unfortunate recording techniques that were seriously misused over the following thirty years or more.

It's here finally!! This is only in 128 but that doesn't bother me that much. Enjoy.
