Architecture in Helsinki - In Case We Die

AMG: On their debut album, Fingers Crossed, Architecture in Helsinki felt like they were just getting their bearings. This gave the album, and the Australian indie pop collective's mix of symphonic and electronic pop, a tentative, first-steps kind of charm. However, after a spending a year on the road tightening up their live act, and a little while longer in their wonderfully named Super Melody World studio recording their second album, In Case We Die, the group sounds much more assured. Everything on In Case We Die, from the intensely sweet melodies and vocals to the widescreen production, delivers the kind of playful pop majesty that Fingers Crossed's best moments hinted were within Architecture in Helsinki's grasp. "More assured" doesn't mean "less creative" though; this is a second album that really does expand on the sounds and ideas of the debut instead of just rehashing them. Indeed, Fingers Crossed's standout pocket symphony, "The Owls Go," feels like a template for In Case We Die's lush, playful, multifaceted sound. Most of the songs have lots of parts and changes to them, such as the opener, "Neverevereverdid," which begins with a spooky, operatic fanfare, then becomes delicately rambling folk-pop, and finally morphs into speedy, shouty Krautrock. Despite the ambition of songs like this and the suite-like "In Case We Die, Pts. 1-4," the album never feels ponderous; in fact, it's often even cuter than Fingers Crossed was. "It'5!" and "Cemetery" are adorable without being saccharine, and touches like the power-drill solo on "Frenchy, I'm Faking" and jungle sound effects on "Need to Shout" ensure that the album's more polished sound never feels slick or stuffy. Even In Case We Die's most straightforward moment, the single "Do the Whirlwind" -- which is so sleekly synthy that it could almost pass for straight-up dance-pop -- shares at least some of the quirky warmth of more homespun-sounding songs like "Tiny Paintings." An album with this much vibrant, irresistible, Technicolor music to its name could have only come from a place called Super Melody World. Not only is it a delight to hear Architecture in Helsinki come into their own on In Case We Die, but the fact that it comes so soon after their debut makes it all the sweeter.

Probably the greatest rock band to come out of Russia, and definatly the one with the most impact. It really captures the mood of the perestroika-era (reconstruction) of Russia just before the Soviet-Union's collapse. Of course the band's legacy was solidified as Victor Tsoi (vocals) died in a car accident in 1990.
Not sure how well this will be received considering a lot of the appeal is the lyrics. Wikipedia says they were influenced by Joy Division, Duran Duran, The Clash, The Smiths and other English bands, also not sure how much truth there is to this because they sure are hell don't sound like anything The Clash.

It is on OutKast's debut album that the fledgling production team Organized Noize began forging one of the most distinctive production sounds in popular music in the '90s: part hip-hop; part live, Southern-fried guitar licks and booty-thick bass runs; and part lazy, early-'70s soul. The album was not only artistically successful but also thrived commercially, leaping into the Top 20 album chart on the back of the outstanding hit single "Player's Ball" and eventually going platinum. Although a little bit too dependent on overly simplistic and programmed snare beats, the music is unconditionally excellent, with languid, mellow melodies sliding atop rapid, mechanical drums. Organized Noize already had their distinguishing sound figured out, down to the last twanged, wah-wahed note. But what makes Southernplayalisticadillacmuzick such a wonderful album has even more to do with the presence of its rappers, Dre and Big Boi. No one sounded like OutKast in 1994 -- a mixture of lyrical acuity, goofball humor, Southern drawl, funky timing, and legitimate offbeat personalities. Few rappers of the '90s have displayed such an inventive sense of rhyme flow either, and few rap artists in general have ears as attuned to creating such catchy melodic and vocal hooks. Almost every song has some sort of tuneful chant or repetitive hook that marks it as instantly memorable. There are occasional dull and mediocre spots, such as "Call of Da Wild" and the overlong "Funky Ride," that can't even be elevated by a head-nodding bassline or a tricky rhyme. Such low points, however, are far outshined by the brilliant moments. Already an extremely strong showing, OutKast would continue to develop into one of the finest, most consistently challenging (not to mention booty-shaking) rap groups of the decade.

2.goddamnit, how many times do i have to say i can't use mediafire. the one reason i can upload to sendspace is because of the sendspace wizard. my compute will not upload to a webpage. if you know another site i could use with a similar program, id be glad to use it. otherwise shut the hell up. if you don't want to take the time to download the music, then don't download it.

Moldy Peaches - Moldy Peaches

Picture Beat Happening without the charm and wit (and with even less musical talent). The Moldy Peaches attempt to be humorous and fail miserably, thinking that using "turd" in their songs is tantamount to being funny. Unfortunately many of the songs are musically quite good (some, however, are just horrible). A few even start off with great lyrics, but a verse or two into the song break down; "Anyone Else But You" is such a song. Musically it is nice and lyrically it even starts off quite well, but very quickly it degrades. The Moldy Peaches have a great lo-fi approach to music which is too often spoiled by poor lyrics; maybe their live performance -- in which the duo dresses in a rat costume and a sailor outfit -- simply doesn't translate well into recorded media.
