Some folks also need to lurk the fuck more.

"Hi, I'm new here!  First post!  So I guess I'll upload OK Computer, Sgt. Pepper's, every Bright Eyes Album, and while I'm at it, Dark Side of the Moon because people should really check these albums out!  Also I'm going to use sendspace because viruses are awesome!"

The general consensus is that one should lurk on the music forum for a while before posting.  I don't see how this one thread should be an exception to that.

From this thread, I've downloaded Tom Waits, Iggy Pop, De La Soul, Beta Band, Televesion, Aphex Twin, Talking Heads, MIA, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Wilco, King Tubby, The Knife, The Wrens, Neutral Milk Hotel, Neu, Liars, TV On The Radio and The Flaming Lips. I could ask 20 different people and I'm sure at least for every person they'd go "Fuck, you haven't heard <insert album here>?!". Point is, your definition of a must own album isn't my definition of a must own album. I've uploaded what I consider to be 'must own' albums, and have had over 400 downloads of them, so there must be people wanting them who didn't have it.

Secondly, I skip over anything I haven't heard of before, as I've far too much music I haven't listened to that I planned to (mostly by the above people) to download random artists. I'm gonna take a guess that there are quite a few people who are the same. Lastly, how hard is it to skip over the stuff you don't want in the thread? Look at the name of the album and artist, read the description if it interests you, skip if it doesn't. If it's something you already own then it's even quicker. You're bitching about wasting maybe 2 minutes of your day when you get a crapload of free albums.

I sincerely miss when this thread wasn't full of brand new people posting sendspace links, or posting albums that everyone in the known Universe has already heard, or complaining about the search function, or uploading two dozen "wacky" albums to prove how "far out" they are.

the only thing wrong with this is that your complaining about people uploading stuff that you have already heard but complain when people upload stuff you think is "wacky" which is obviously new music to you.. so you apparently want nobody to upload anything i guess? and the idea that someone would upload weird albums just to prove to people they have never met on an internet forum that they are special is absurd.. they upload it because they like it and because they think that you will too no other reason.

Apple Snails - Only on a macadam road

following up releases on crocomodile and an exquisite split cassette w/ the mighty acts of god on DNT, jeffrey mitchell's apple snails take a whole new approach on "only a macadam road," and the results are stunning. it's full of ambient drones that sound like they were born in the northern lights. the road is bathed in darkness, but tiny fragments of light seep through the murk every so often in the form of acoustic melodies and glockenspiel bursts. it's music that transports you far, far away. we've been working on this one for what seems like forever... so long in the making that the inserts actually say foxglove132, but good things certainly come to those who have waited for this apple-eyed gem.

In the spirit of posting stuff that's not so easy to find:

Various Fucking Awesome Artists - Dischord 1981: The Year in Seven Inches

Quote
AMG: Dischord 1981: The Year in Seven Inches tells the story of the origins of the one of the first hardcore punk labels and the early D.C. hardcore scene. When the Teen Idles had no one to release their posthumous record, Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson took $600 in the band's gig money and made it themselves. Like every band on this album, the Teen Idles were meagerly recorded on a four-track, giving them a raw sound that came to characterize the early hardcore scene. The album kicks off with "Teen Idles," a 44-second anthem that ends with the memorable line "We're as idle as teens can get." Debuts of four other D.C. bands follow. A young Henry Garfield (later known as Henry Rollins) is heard chanting with S.O.A. (State of Alert). With the breakup of the Teen Idles, Nelson and MacKaye went onto form Minor Threat, whose classics "Straight Edge" and "Minor Threat" appear along with "In My Eyes" and "Out of Step" from its second EP. The hard-driving, super-fast songs of Government Issue and Youth Brigade bring the record's total to 48 tracks, all for eight bucks

Fuck yes for 80s hardcore. To bring things up to date, the Kids Return lp I got tonight helpfully included a cd version of the album, so I'm finally able to share some recent emo.

It is traditional that every year I "pen" a review that contains a sentence that says "it is traditional that every...", hang on, this isn't going to work... Ok, every year we get one or two emo records that are worth adding to the pantheon of the genre. This year, both of those LPs have been released by UK bands. One of them is Kids Return. When I put this LP on last night for the first time, my jaw dropped and I played air guitar in the kitchen instead of washing up to the spiralling climax of "The World Is Burning...". It was spot on, it was the best kind of music. The music which takes over my dis-coordinated body and makes it move in some kind of rhythm, clapping my hands and not really looking like I am quite with it.

Kids Return offer up 8 songs of intense, melodic emo. It's all about the driving guitars that play off each other, working in the twinkles, the sing/speak/shout/sob vocals, and all the other elements that this sound is known for, albeit so sporadically in the waning years of the first decade of the twenty first century. The vocals are a particular stand-out for me, I am struggling to think of a way to phrase it without sounding horribly technical, which would be so far removed from the music, so I won't bother.

There are all sorts of bands that this compares well to, chiefly it brings to mind Life at these Speeds first LP, but also the REDS LP, and with touches of Yaphet Kotto and September. It's not a direct imitation of any of those, nor any of the many other mid 90s forebears, but the band brings together each component to create a fine, fine album.

It would be amiss of me to neglect to mention the attention to detail in the packaging, this has been lovingly crafted and proves that the people in this band are up to their necks in it. With so few bands going the extra mile these days, it's impossible to dismiss it as cynical or bandwagon hopping as it may have been back when every emo 7" came in an envelope with 100 screen printed pictures of broken, rusting cars.

Be sure to spend a few moments with the lyric booklet too, for it contains observations and feelings that will strike a chord with most if not all. Who knew emo lyrics didn't have to be about lost love or so contrived that they were lost on all but the writer?

And so. 2007 draws to an end, and we get that emo record that a few of us crave, to keep the music ticking over. Wonderful.
Recommended record by Collective Zine!

I really recommend getting a physical copy of this if you enjoy it, like all good emo bands they've really put the effort in with the packaging. It's available from here: http://www.myspace.com/towerofpowerrecords

Use the Search function while you're actually browsing the thread.  Otherwise it'll search for threads that have what you're looking for and just give you a link to this one, which doesn't help you at all.

EDIT: I just did that and it's actually not on the thread.  Can I get some of whatever you're smoking?

Oh the irony.

I'll have Giant Sand - Chore of Enchantment up later.

You wouldn't be talking about the Arizona desert rock band would you? I lost the dicography (up until the mid nineties) the first time I lost a computer and never replaced it. That was a really interesting scene, I should probably upload some related bands, most of them have been forgotten, unfortunately.

the only thing wrong with this is that your complaining about people uploading stuff that you have already heard but complain when people upload stuff you think is "wacky" which is obviously new music to you.. so you apparently want nobody to upload anything i guess? and the idea that someone would upload weird albums just to prove to people they have never met on an internet forum that they are special is absurd.. they upload it because they like it and because they think that you will too no other reason.

Be careful, young chick. Zerodrone does actually have a few good points, he's just blunt and doesn't take the time to explain himself right off the bat. The "wacky" stuff he mentions isn't new to him at all, or even most of us. But he has a point with new users coming here and posting the "wacky" Aeroplane Over The Sea for the upteenth time as an introduction. These posters should lurk a little more instead of trying to stamp that impression on us right away by sharing a 'must have' album.
Unfortunately, most of these folks signed up just for this thread and may have no interest in waiting around before getting in on the action. I consider these "sudden impulse" memberships each time I see them. They're not a bad thing, we all start out somewhere. But to a much lesser degree, it smacks of "teh penguin of doom".

What I'm saying, and what I think Jackie might be saying, is that there's no rush, you guys! You got all the time in the world for us to get to know you. You don't gotta post Neutral Milk Hotel (again) to get our approval. Posting an album isn't an introduction, you should get into the swing of things too. There's much more than this thread to enjoy. IF the album is great, and isn't here yet, by all means, post it. But give us some words about you too! You ain't what you listen to, which seems to be the impression a few of us get from these 'impulse memberships'.

I think those are pretty poor points actually. After looking at the previous couple of pages of this thread the new posters mostly seem to be uploading records by people I've never heard of and not a Neutral Milk Hotel in sight. The people posting the most famous stuff to me (Bob Dylan, Squarepusher and Aphex Twin) are people who've been here for quite some time. I suppose you could include X-Ray Spex as being pretty canonical, but Germ Free Adolescents is hardly all over this thread and although very well known to those with an interest in punk rock that doesn't characterise everybody on this forum by a long shot. I'm willing to bet most of you don't even own Chaos Is Me and Start Today (flippin' heathens).

Anyway, if we're rocking the Skitkids then I feel we shouldn't skimp on things with a crusty vibe so here's Australia's Schifosi. I can't find a picture of the cover so here's one of the band looking very happy (and dressed exactly how you'd expect).

That's really not relevant to the discussion, if you want to debate the ethics of downloading then the best thing to do would be to start a new thread about it. It always results in pages of dialogue and bringing it up in here will only make for one hell of a confusing read.

So, ignoring (or maybe not) the ongoing debate, what's a alternative to sendspace for files over 100MB?  I don't know of one, and this album is already uploading.  Don't think any less of me for having to use it then.

what debate?

i've just split the album up into two folders (tracks 1-10 tracks 11-20 for example) in the past.

I've got an album by a band called Dodos.  It's a Pitchfork best music selection so, for those of you who are too cool to listen to OK Computer, just a heads up . . . I jest, I jest.  And I fully respect your right to ignore that album :)  Anyway, this is really good.

Dodos - Visiter

Pitchfork (8.5)
Quote
To understand where San Francisco's Dodos are coming from, just check the weekend itinerary from their most recent visit to L.A. On a Friday, they did a campus show for USC students; but when a miscommunication foiled their next day's plan to play at the Smell-- the venue at the epicenter of the local scene-- they ended up joining a bill with Thee Oh Sees and the Crystal Antlers at a birthday party at the Silverlake Lounge, an intimate, cozy space where you can't see a thing if you're more than five feet from the stage. It's within those coordinates (campus-quad pop, art-punk, and communal, lo-fi folk) that their Frenchkiss debut Visiter exists; an acoustic-and-percussion duo at their core, Dodos manage to hit with a full-band force that's even more pronounced in their astounding live sets.
On Visiter, Dodos guitarist Meric Long alternates between fingerpicking and breakneck strumming while playing in confounding alternate tunings. Logan Kroeber's clattering, locomotive percussion (which includes shoes outfitted with tambourines) is every bit a lead instrument as Long's guitar, and a big reason the band's music has garnered comparisons to the less abstract moments of Animal Collective and the output of other new-primitivist bands like High Places and Yeasayer.

The first quarter of Visiter marries those impulses with fantastic results. The banjo playing and female harmonies on opener "Walking" echo Michigan-era Sufjan, but the connection ends at Long's stridently confident vocal delivery. That song immediately segues into the maniacal "Red & Purple", a bewilderingly worded love song accompanied by a toy piano and fuzzy bass. And after the brief "Eyelids" comes "Fools", which has been bouncing around the web in some form for months, and is fast becoming the Dodos' signature tune-- although it may soon be eclipsed by the rollicking, Feelies-esque "Jodi".

From that point on, Visiter alternates between longer, more improvisatory material and near-interludes, which can leave a slightly spotty impression on its first few listens. With more exposure, the record reveals the celebratory acoustics of Led Zeppelin III or a more song-oriented take on tourmates Akron/Family. Playing with infectious fervor, Long runs through tricky blues-boxing and molten slide riffs on the galloping "Paint the Rust" and the second half of the epic "Joe's Waltz".

Visiter's second half is anchored by "The Season" and "God?", two massive shapeshifters that help define the record. Long and Kroeber here don't seem wedded to power duo minimalism-- and it's intriguing to wonder how they could incorporate their backgrounds in metal, African Ewe drumming, and gamelan beyond a sense of rhythmic intensity. These possibilities could also make more streamlined, Magnetic Fields-like numbers "Winter" and "Undeclared" seem vanilla by comparison to some, but by making room for both, Visiter ends up being one of the most welcoming (and welcome) records of 2008 so far.

To fully understand that the Felice Brothers are the real deal -- that they're a pack of earth-stained country boys from the wilds of the Catskill Mountains, not Ivy Leaguers who thought ransacking their parents '60s records would a better career move than grad school -- it helps to see them live, where they channel the Woodstock spirit with authenticity and reverence. It doesn't hurt that Ian Felice sounds like Bob Dylan after a handful of singing lessons, his vocals weathered and weary but skilled enough to bring these Appalachian melodies to life. It doesn't hurt that he knows when to speak, when to croon, and when to hand over the microphone to one of his brothers, several of whom helm their own songs. Most of all, it doesn't hurt that the Felice Brothers are the perfect group to helm this sort of whiskey-soaked, Beat Generation nostalgia, as they inhabit their songs to the fullest extent possible. Theirs is a world of moons and moonshine, mountains and cabins, a place where men get drunk on Jack Daniels and stalk off, guns in hand, to confront their cuckolding wives. The Tennessee-bred Kings of Leon sang about a similar world on Youth & Young Manhood and Aha Shake Heartbreak, but while those siblings were blessed with fashion sense and rugged good looks, the Felices are ragged, scruffy, and dirty-faced. So even when this self-titled LP gets bogged down by a string of melancholic ballads -- even when the band's devotion to Depression-era imagery gets a bit too depressing -- the Felice Brothers remain thoroughly convincing and skate by on the strength of the atmosphere they've created. Accordions, Hammond organs, guitars, and group vocals are all here, conjuring up memories of vagabonds wandering the train tracks and drunks falling off their barstools. One can't help but wish the 15-track set list included more numbers like "Frankie's Gun," which features some of Ian's wittiest lyrics and the brothers' spot-on imitation of the Band, but it's hard to find fault in this collection of earthy ballads and barroom jams.

Basically, it's really good Americana/folky-roots rock.  Sorry for having to use sendspace.

Also, instead of arguing lets work on making the thread good again.  Currently it is blah.  Thank you.
That is mean and not-too-cool. Some people are still trying, Miss.

Well, fuck, Mr. Rude-ass, did you think I maybe didn't see it?
This is angry and petulant. Some people would say you are not being very nice. Improve that attitude Sir.

Also, ptownblazer, thank you for withdrawing your post. It was also not-so-nice. You are good people.

Zero: I will definitely check out the show, because I have heard of 12 Oz. Mouse. Is it in any way comparable to Frisky Dingo perchance?
Edit: By Frisky Dingo, I'm addressing the way you say 12 Oz. Mouse's story moves.

I was actually just trying to be lighthearted.  Perhaps instead of being accusatory, try being a little less obtuse about people's opinions.  The argument DOES bring the thread down, and I am not going to back away from that opinion.

Edit 2: Trillian, it's hard to respond to you when you edit your posts. I'll try not to be too 'obtuse' in the future. I knew you were being lighthearted. I thought I was too, but I guess it's hard to get tone across properly on the internet without somebody starting a petty feud.

. . . I knew you were being lighthearted. I thought I was too, but I guess it's hard to get tone across properly on the internet without somebody starting a petty feud. . .

Amen brother!  That's going to be my new signature . . . OK not really, but it wouldn't be too bad!

edit - not to beat a dead horse, but i will anyway.  in the aeroplane over the sea has been posted a grand total of . . . drum roll . . . two times!  a far cry from "umpteen" as was stated earlier.  in fact it was "sox" who stated this.  some choice lines . . .

. . . But he has a point with new users coming here and posting the "wacky" Aeroplane Over The Sea for the upteenth time as an introduction . . . You don't gotta post Neutral Milk Hotel (again) to get our approval . . . I consider these "sudden impulse" memberships each time I see them. They're not a bad thing, we all start out somewhere . . .

interesting, his very first post on the forum was . . . another drumroll . . .

Quote from: Jeff Mangum
I love you, Jesus christ. Jesus Christ, I love you.

I can't understand why anybody who would otherwise enjoy the song would find this lyric irritating. Do a lot of people have a problem with musicians using the phrase 'Jesus christ' in their songs?
It must be hard being Jeff Mangum. There's a lot of pressure on him to out perform this album if or when he decides to start writing and recording music again. No matter what he would do, people would say it wasn't as good as Aeroplane, even if it was better.

Bonus points to the man for not putting out the same schlock album over and over like most other 90s indie 'heroes' that kept on trucking.

i don't think i need to point out the irony here.  and notice the date of the first post.  1 month and two weeks.  priceless stuff.  we are what we hate.  i'm no different, and i promise i'm called on my b.s. all the time, it's just great to finally be able to call somebody else out for a change . . . anyway,  i love this board and everybody on it.  sox i love you too.  i recognize myself in your post and i'm sure that's why i feel compelled to call you out.

The only reason I edited my post is because I figured that the original post would create conflict.  I was trying to amend it to be less confrontational.  You have a way of pointing out what you think people do wrong according to your opinion.  I don't want to argue so this will be the last post I make on the subject, but perhaps everyone should keep the finger pointing on the dl, especially because tone is so hard to discern on a forum.

As for everyone else, sorry the music posting is taking a while.  I am on a crappy internet connection at my grandmother's house (as I am visiting her this week), so uploads are not being very cooperative.

Dvorák: Serenades
Myung-Whun Chung and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (2003)

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?0wm2qdu3ymn
Simple and beautiful. I'm no classical music buff, but I went and looked up some other recordings of this piece. The difference is amazing.

Quote from: AMG Classical
Funky as it was, you can retire the old Kertesz recording of Dvorák's Serenades. Elegant as it was, you can retire the old Marriner, and virtuostic as it was, you can retire the old Orpheus, too. Because as great as they all were, this 2001 recording by Myung-Whun Chung and the Vienna Philharmonic is simply the greatest recording of these two eternally delightful works ever recorded. Part of the reason -- maybe the largest part -- is the magnificent playing. In the Serenade for winds, the oboes are sweetly plangent, the clarinets are tenderly dulcet, the bassoons are suavely elegant, the double bassoon is gracefully gawky, the horns are romantically rousing, and in its solo in the sensual Andante con moto nocturne, the double bass is as sexy as a double bass can be. In the Serenade for strings, the strings of the Vienna Philharmonic play with incredible precision, unbelievable passion, and unending beauty of tone; in other words, like the string section of the world's greatest orchestra. But some of the reason is the exquisitely tactful conducting. Chung molds each of the movements of the Serenade for strings into a heartwarming and soul-satisfying whole. Better yet, he lets the Vienna's wind players have their way in their serenade, allowing them the freedom to be themselves in the context of his genial direction. And a small part of the reason is Deutsche Grammophon's superb sound: real and lifelike and right in your living room.

Complaint-free, cost-free, easy-to-ignore-if-that's-your-thing audio goodness ahoy!

And my computer just ate this post that I've been slowly writing all evening, so sorry if I don't say much in the re-write.  I've got knitting to do before bed.

Today I've got some delicioussss Matson Jones for you!

[img width= height=]http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/7420/mjde2yl.th.jpg[/img]

Do you like cellos?  Sexy, angry cellos?  What about sexy angry cellos attached to sexy, angry girls?  Seriously, the combination of cellos and double bass and growled harmonies and aggressive drumming is cream-worthy.  "A Little Bit of Arson Never Hurt Anyone" will make your toes ache.  You need this album.  Very yum.

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?dmyi2hmupdz

Next up, I have two little treats for my fellow writers and/or literary enthusiasts.  The first will make you look like a douchebag if you are listening to it on your ipod because it will be physically impossible to not double over giggling.  yessirree it'sssss

David Sedaris reading his essay Six to Eight Black Men

[img width= height=]http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/3691/3391ui8.jpg[/img]

Which touches on gun laws and the Dutch Santa, and is straight up brilliantly funny.  If you already love Sedaris this is a good'un, and if you're new to him it is a perfect introduction to him and you will pretty much have no choice but to get all of his books as soon as you are done listening.  This man is amazing.

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?teaygjmwb4o
The second treat is a three-disc collection called Poetry Speaks of fantastic poets reading their own works.  Some really incredible recordings here by most of the greats, from Browning to Kerouac and beyond.  Disc one is a little stuffy for my taste, but discs two and three are packed with good stuff.  I took all the time to write out the contributors' names last time I wrote this post, and frankly I'm too tired to do it again, but just trust me on this one.

Disc One
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?93mbol2t9zwDisc Two
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?dtdbsn1f9vmDisc Three
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?yxu9xxjayz7

Hopefully the last two bits are kosher.  I know they're not technically music, but this is the stuff I listen to on MY ipod, anyway.

BUT SERIOUSLY.  GET THAT MATSON JONES.
DO IT.
NOW.

I'll upload the Agalloch albums when I get up.  For now, I sleep.

Cire27: Ya know, if you sign up for an account you can see how many downloads a file has.
For instance: Lamentations Disc 1 has 58 downloads, and Lamentations Disc 2 has 52.  Unless 6 people bought the album right away after listening to Disc 1 (or didn't like it so deleted, which I think would be kinda dumb, because Disc 1 and Disc 2 are very different, but w/e), then some people only have the first one.  Important?  No.  Interesting, yes!  Why should anyone care?  I don't know!
My most popular upload was Beatles Regrooved, with 90 downloads.  I think that's funny.

A heady, introspective mood is established immediately with the opening "Dust of Butterflies", as swaying vocal samples whisper through static electronics, sorrowful violin, and acoustic guitar yearnings. And onward: electric sitar meanders through folding rainforest samples and the mallet-massaged drums of "Bamboo Rockets"; incessant percussive mantras exhume mystical vocal spirits in the trance-inducing "Tarok, Son of Stone"; Field recordings weave through Glenn Jones' signature crystalline electric guitar, as "Bellevue Bridge" comes the closest to that familiar Cul de Sac sound, while the title track "Death of the Sun" makes the most jarring departure, melding tripped-out beats, dirge guitar, unsettling samples and acoustic textures into one wildly hallucinogenic ride. The haunting closer, "I Remember Nothing More", saunters morosely with acoustic guitar, sparse drums, and a ghostly vocal sample flowing over and under the song's moody current. Astonishingly, no two songs were created in the same way.

So you've asked for more 80's hardcore punk? Well this is kinda 80's, more like 80's style...along the lines of Negative Approach, a kind of fast to slow hardcore punk band with oi-ish vocals. Anyway, this is one of my favourite records of the past few years. Saw this band once too, massive fun.

Nice one, I've heard the name 86 Mentality about but I never got around to checking them out. To continue in this vein, here is one of the best records of all time.

The Faith/Void - split LP

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?i2m0vlednnn
This is the re-release which included The Faith's Subject To Change EP. With The Faith you can hear the genesis of emo on their tracks from Subject To Change as well as one of the best examples of straight-up 80s hardcore with the earlier songs, particularly the ripping What's Wrong With Me? that Charles Bronson did an excellent cover of. For me Void are the better band here though. Void sounded like nobody else, taking hardcore and making it as harsh and unpleasant as they could. The vocals are unhinged and the music is chaotic and utterly vital. It wasn't until screamo and bands like Rorschach, Mohinder, Three Studies For A Crucifixion and Love Lost But Not Forgotten that hardcore would get this downright fucked up again. Pretty much all of the great hardcore of the past 25 years and a slew of other music besides owes its existence to this record, so if you have even a passing interest in the genre this is essential listening.

yes!  yes!  yes!

also, Cire27, I'm totally enjoying the Felice brothers indeed.

I'm glad people like the Matson Jones.  It's the kind of album that I just want to burn a million copies of and leave in everyone's cd players when they're not looking.  And, oddly enough, I heard enough Rasputina references that I looked them up and discovered that I really don't enjoy Rasputina at all.  Strange, huh?  I don't get it.
