Not everyone is terribly expressive facially or verbally, regardless of how strong their feelings might be. Textual expression is in many ways massively simplified, and in an instance like this where he's not expecting to be showing it off to others there can also be a certain degree of released inhibitions. I personally actually saw that in reverse, that Marten does have a big ol' grin or two in him even if it's not generally terribly visible. I think he was probably quite genuinely pleased when he added Padma to the contacts list.

I usually just give my phone to the other person and tell them to add themselves. I can see Padma putting in the ": D" when adding herself - she's forward like that.

I think Jeph changed Marten's shirt just so we could argue over the semiotics of it. Because it's all about US! :-P
