Why is Raven acting so surprised and saddened now? She already knew.

PS: I think Dora and Raven both look much better in that earlier strip. Also, Raven's tat?

Nothing had happened at that point, they'd just gone hiking, and not even alone, with three other folks.

Well, since we haven't seen Faye at the shop we can guess she's at the flat. Although she might be at Angus' since I don't think she'd let Marten leave the house without trousers. In fact, she hasn't let him before. Pintsize or maybe even Hanners is probably around any way.

On the "Are they nice?" question, well imagine someone asking Angus that about Renee. :-P

Mayhaps Raven is pretending she didn't know as to not tip Dora off that Raven knew about this before (which would imply she heard this news from somewhere else and that Dora is being kept out of the loop.)

Raven's smart about some things.

I'm surprised no one commented about how Raven colour cooridinated her dress with her hair dye.

As for seeming not to know about the Padma/Marten hookup she probably just forgot because her mind is too full of advanced physics calculations.  Hard to remember who might be hooking up with who(or is it whom?) when you're working on a Unified Field Theory in your head.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not expecting Marten to go through the same mopey hell that he went through last time.
First, because his time with Padma will be significantly shorter than his time with Dora, so his emotional investment is less (or should be).
Second, in the same way that Dora has been allowed to show maturity in the recent break-up with Marten, I would think that Marten would be allowed to show some similar emotional growth.
Sure, someone like Faye or Steve should have "that" conversation about his behavior last time so that he can process the information before hand. And it's arguable that because Dora has had so many bad break-ups in her past that she's learned to deal with it more quickly. However, I'd really like to see Marten handle this well and defy expectations. It may not add much drama or humor to the strip if he does, but then not acting as people expect can be funny in it's own way.

Or maybe someone will initiate a per-emptive strike by having his mother come to town for a visit. Mom's visits are always fun.

1. Sympathy. She's trying to show empathy with Marten over the situation, even if she already knew Padma was booking for Cali in a few weeks.

2. Re: Earlier Strip - I actually don't like how they looked in that one. Raven looked a bit odd in a few of the frames (which I think I pointed out in that week's WCDT).

3. Raven's "kanji" tattoo is just being covered up by that cute top of hers. (Pink with black lace - yep, that's a Raven blouse, all right.)

I fully expect the ultimate result of the Padma/Marten hookup and breakup will be the proverbial slap-in-the-face that Marten needs to wake up.

E.g., Padma saying something like "You wanna be with me? You?  Dude, you have no prospects. You're floating through life. And that's just not attractive for the long term. It was fun. See ya."

... and at least get a revelation from it. Realizing would be the first step. A decline in attractiveness when you have nothing going on in your life is a very real thing.
... on the other hand, Faye and some other cast members have equally little going on in their life for the long run but we never complain about them. I wonder why.

The basic rule is to use "in-" ("im-", "il-", "ir-") with words of Latin and (rarely) Greek origin, and to use "un-" with ... um, English words of any origin ... including Latin and Greek ... um ...

A rule of thumb: The less common (more "learned") words of classical origin are the ones with which to use "in-" for negation.

Never mind that there is an unrelated[sic!] Latin "in-"/"im-"/"il-"/"ir-" ... it wouldn't be English without complications.  8-)

The rule, such as it is, is not maintained consistently.  English speakers quite often get the choice wrong (if merely using the less common need be considered wrong at all).  In a few cases, the use of un- and in- distinguishes two different meanings (there's an obvious example, which I can't recall - I'll add it here if it pops into my mind).

[edit] The example I was trying for is in fact different: uninterested and disinterested - so that claim may be wrong.

"unto" and "into"?

<grin,duck,run>

Edit: Seriously though, examples like "informed" vs "unformed", "insure" vs "unsure", or "invoiced" vs "unvoiced" are using the other Latin prefix "in-", not the negating one.

Others, like "insubstantial" vs "unsubstantial" seem synonymous enough – just that one was negated by Romance speakers before export to English, while the other was negated by English speakers after import from Romance languages.

But yeah, I should not be surprised if there turns out to be an example of real difference.  English is a living language, and a free one – it cares not for our rules.

But those aren't prefixes.  Or rather, un is not in that case, but in- is a different (also Latin) prefix from in- meaning not, in this case the prefix being the same as the one in inflame or inter (bury).

@snubnose: Just because it's harsh doesn't mean it can't be helpful and positive.

@Soulsynger: you know, that's a damn good point. Faye has been much more cavalier about the possibility of working on her art/sculpture (the strip where she's balancing a sword on her nose comes to mind). On the other hand, you can argue that Faye does at least have the possibility of a wealthy art gallery owner interested in her work.

Marten ceasing to be the lead character in what was originally a webcomic that focussed mainly on him would be quite the twist.  This kind of thing isn't uncommon on TV, but does anyone know  of it happening in a webcomic?

Okay, guys, I am calling it now.

Marten is gonna die. How, you ask? Well. The story between him and Padma doesn't work out. At the age of forty or so, he gets some nanoplastic surgery mubmojumbo, travels back in time and hooks up with Faye's mom. He lives a happy live close to Faye and then eventually decides that he has lived a happy live and can "leave" now. He shoots himself, forgetting/not realizing that he would scar Faye for life; his corpse is taken away. Then Space Wizards appear and resurrect him.

Gosh, I am so glad Jeph is the one writing the story.

I'm calling it now: Raven goes to 'comfort' Marten, and hilarity will ensue once an anthroPC, edible panties, and the evolved descendants of the rocket roombas become involved.

OK, so first time poster, long timer lurker, yadda yadda...

So yeah, previous discussions/knowledge not withstanding, Dora is probably realizing just how hard Marten has fallen for Padma, and senses the potential of much turmoil on the horizon. She would, after all, be one of the best at reading his non-verbals and tone. Dora could be remembering mopey Marten from their breakup, or even further back to Marten's original cross country shenanigans and why he moved East in the first place.

So if she is, does she step in and try to "save" him as a friend? Does she organize the CoD crew for wacky hijinx in order to intervene? Does she sit back and wait to be the friend/shoulder to mope on when Padma does leave? Etc., Etc..

Lots of different ways it could go, if Dora gets more involved in the ongoing plot. Or not, if it's just a one-off.

Marten (Glaring at Dora):  "You have made an enemy today."

Disappears from the Comic and changes his name to Captain Black - and begins terrible and protracted revenge against Dora and her decedents.

You know, you raise an interesting point. However, I believe Dora in her current state would be unlikely to intervene. For one, she probably isn't sure how to handle the situation, given that Marten was likely the boyfriend she was emotionally attached to the most, ever (I am speculating here a bit, but considering all her previous boyfriends were jackasses, I would say that's an educated guess.) On the other hand, she might not want to intervene, lest Marten thinks that she is meddling in his stuff again (as a parallel to her controlling behavior which eventually led to their breakup.)

Actually, that could be an interesting scenario:

He starts thinking about returning to Cali - to the point where he's buying the plane tickets.

Dora angrily tells him he's a fool to go, but that if it makes him happy, pursue it.

And he has an epiphany as he's at the airport.

He disappears from the strip for a while. Everyone assumes he's gone to California.

Then, one day, he shows up at CoD.

For some reason, Raven's "Oh noes!" is my favourite moment of today's comic. It just seems so appropriate for her character to say that!

Raven's slowing down. Did she even TRY to grab that boxer'd indie ass?

(Its just imaginary harshness)
... and at least get a revelation from it. Realizing would be the first step. A decline in attractiveness when you have nothing going on in your life is a very real thing.
... on the other hand, Faye and some other cast members have equally little going on in their life for the long run but we never complain about them. I wonder why.

Marten has more openly complained about where he is at with his life. Faye and the others might complain here and there, but for the most part, they seem pretty content with how things are. I agree that it might seem like a bit of a double standard, but MARTEN is the one who seems to mope about it more, so Marten is the one that we focus on in this area.

Plus, if you think about it, most of the characters do have a lot going on. Faye is still in therapy and working on coming to terms with what has happened in her life. I would think that this is her priority right now-- not advancing her career or exploring her art, etc. Dora owns a business. Hannelore is working two jobs-- one is more for fun/personal reasons, and she seems to get out fairly often, for someone with extreme phobias. Tai works at the library, too, but she is a student at that college, and she works on DJ stuff in her spare time. Raven is a student. Etc, etc. Marten works at the college library of a school he is not a part of. We do not see him regularly taking part in hobbies. (It would be nice if he could mention his music more often. Or music in general, which did seem to be more of a hobby for him in the beginning of the comic.) And he has been down a lot lately. Soooo. It's really easy to focus on him.

I'm sorry if I'm not making sense. It's bedtime. ^^;

Fascinating question. Dora somehow feels like just the type to meddle, but are there any cases where she has actually done so?

Maybe Raven doesn't do ass-grabs on people in relationships?

I agree that Dora kind of feels like a meddler/manipulater type, but she never seems to do anything like that. She also feels a lot less stable than her actions (outward appearance?) show.

I wonder what/when/if a side like that will ever show up in the comic, but based on her actual history, that kind of stuff would be out of character. As much as we may feel like it's within her, there seems to be little evidence for it.
