I just watched [movie x here]
hedgie:
And watching it now is certainly different (and more cringeworthy) than when it came out.
sitnspin:
The whole dude manages to score with the hot lesbian trope definitely grates on me. Whatever positive message you could pull from the movie is overpowered by that and the constant homophobic language. The message a movie is trying to convey does not and never will justify poor execution. I am definitely not the target audience, admittedly. Can't say I am a fan of any of his work that I have seen.
On another note, watched "The Old Guard". As a fan of the comic and of Charlize Theron, I liked it. It was a mostly faithful adaptation of the book, with some minor tweaks. Some were good, some not so much, but overall it was enjoyable. Watching Theron kick ass and slice dudes up with a labrys was definitely fun.
hedgie:
In the '90s, I'm pretty sure that I knew as many lesbian/gay identified people who were actually bisexual as straight identified people who were. I do think that the film was quite guilty of bi-erasure. And the Kinsey Scale, whilst flawed, at least brought forth the idea that it is all a spectrum. Of course, getting into Kevin Smith's myopia about, well, very many things would be demanding of more mental resources than I have right now.
LeeC:
I never saw Chasing Amy but I remember liking Mallrats circa 2002. I tried re-watching it a few years ago with my girlfriend (now wife) and I was pretty embarrassed to have liked it. Reflecting back on why I liked it, I think it was just because at the time "Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back" just came out and my friends and I liked their over-the-top juvenile jokes in it and Dogma. I probably liked Mallrats just beacuse they were in it and they being an homage to Wiley Coyote/Roadrunner. The only other part I found amusing was the big guy trying to see the sailboat (oddly he and Jason Lee would be in a TV show together in the mid 2000s) but that's more of a classic Sisyphean joke. Everything regarding the actual plot is just a mess.
(click to show/hide)Protagonist A is just an obsessive self-centered dude, and Protagonist B (Jason Lee) is just a worse version with jerk written all over him. Both just got dumped and are trying to get their girls back. The Jason Lee character is the worst and really doesn't deserve another chance with his love interest. The only reason they get back together is because Affleck's character is a rich snobby jerk (and a pedo which was probably tacked onto the movie to justify him as being a bad guy and Jason Lee a saint in comparison). Honestly she should have just forever dumped both of them and moved on. And what a waste of a Stan Lee cameo and all Jason Lee's character does is talk about superhero dongs. Honestly the whole plot is just contrived with cringe-worthy dialogue.
Its just not a good movie, and not in a "didn't age well" kind of way. Its like a made-for-TV movie where they added "raunchy" scenes/dialogue and somehow got green lit to be an actual movie.
oddtail:
@LeeC: I agree Stan Lee is wasted in the movie, but it's still nice to see him. Probably the highlight of the movie.
Although it is extremely funny in hindsight to hear the co-creator of Spider-Man pine about a lost love and say that he would give it all up just for one more day with her.
