Edit: Also, I wouldn't be surprised if his work on gendered AnthroPCs might have affected his attitude towards gender in humans.

I'm that generation and see no problem with it - especially in such a constrained environment.  I see it as no different from the sharing that was inevitable in the cabins when I trekked up Mount Kenya.
