There's like two and a half songs by Clappers that I like too, and I'd happily sacrifice all of them to get rid of the bastard.

Actually he played guitar on one of Roger Waters' solo albums. Hmm.

Oh he's not done anything wrong really, he just irritates me, I think his music is mostly a giant snore and he, like Paul Weller who I also loathe for the most part, seems extremely up his own arse.

I'd argue that the last two minutes of "Layla" are enough to warrant having Clapton around.

Any band that closes a sub-40-minute album with a 5-minute drum solo is no friend of mine.

Maybe I've just got different tastes, but there's a fairly long drum solo from Deep Purple's Live In Europe album that's amazing.

I don't (necessarily) have an issue with a drum solo in the middle of a song, provided it's not stupidly long (Led Zeppelin I'm looking at you). Drum solos as a song in their own right? No way.

Literally all bands that have 'x solo' on their setlists need to fucking stop it. Metallica used to give Jason Newsted a bass solo. BASS SOLO PEOPLE. A BASS BY ITSELF. Who the fuck goes to see Metallica and thinks 'you know what this gig needs? A bass solo.'

True, but then, those gigs are usually hours and hours and hours long. Why not give everyone a little space. And why not give the rest of the band a ... rest. Besides, visually, Newsted was pretty awesome when soloing.

(Finally, a bit of music I know something about!)

Then play two hours with an interval in the middle, or 90 minutes each side. And you must've seen a different gig to me cause the one I saw (on DVD admittedly) he was sat down on the stage playing his solo and the rest of the band offstage.

Hmm ... I've seen recordings where he goes completely nuts. Something else, indeed.

Also, Kill 'em all has a bass solo which is awesome. I know that's beside the point. But I thought I'd mention it.

Neil Pert stands alone!

On a completely different planet.

TRIVIA: Ringo Starr hated drum solos. In a complete sense of irony, the one he did for the final medley on Abbey Road (the fill before "The End" starts) was the only one he ever did that was recorded for any length in Beatles recordings history.

The Chili's give Flea a bass solo pretty regularly. Those are pretty rad, though. I could listen to his bass all by itself for a while. <3

I thought that was infamously played by Paul, hence it kinda sucking a dick?

Now there is a band that needs to solo less. 'Give It Away' does not need to be twelve minutes long, kthxbai.

And there are of course, exceptions to every rule. Flea uses the bass as a melodic instrument.

Eh, they're not for everyone. I stumbled upon them as a wee one and they helped me get through many a tough time during adolescence (and sometimes as an adult, tbh) so they have a special place in my heart. I won't get too into it, for fear of being a huge buzzkill.

I like some of their songs, don't get me wrong (usually their more obscure stuff that sounds less like... them) but all the footage of them live has been interminable for me, and now that John has quit again I don't even want to go see them so I can see him jam.

fuck Klinghoffer. Frusciante could put 9 guitar tracks into a mix and make it sound like a beautiful symphony. just one track of Klinghoffer's is too crowded.

also we should probably take this topic to BAND because seriously this is a great talk.

What's the deal with people who take selfies in the mirror...and look at their phone? You know where the camera button is, and you can see what you look like by looking into the mirror. Looking into the mirror instead of at the phone also results in a picture where your head isn't looking awkwardly downward.

It depends on what you're intending to show with the photograph. If it's the outfit, which it usually is in a mirror, then people aren't concentrating on their expression. Also if you're intent is quickly snap it (<30 seconds), and be done then it's easier to look at the phone to be sure the photo is right. It's surprising how much your hand can move when you aren't using your eyes to coordinate between the phone and mirror.

I'm just reminded of the mirror selfie top-tip: turn your phone around so the camera's facing you and look at your phone's reflection to see the picture. That way you avoid having the phone itself cluttering the shot.

Then you're just getting your face though, which you can do with the front camera, if your phone has one. Most people take photos in a mirror to get more like a full body shot.

As someone who likes to take selfies, including mirror selfies, and also takes photos that involve more conceptual and/or forward planning, they're really not. I think of them more like doodle versions of photos and no one thinks doodles destroy the point of professional/contemporary art. Even then doodles can and do become sketches which are the base of larger pieces.

Also some people just like to take a photo of themselves when they're feeling cute and don't care if the photo is slanted/blurry/cluttered/doesn't follow the rule of thirds/flawed by artistic standards.

I actually often prefer blurry photos. The idea of a 'good' photo is that it looks like real life, which... is just like real life. We see it all the time. Boring! A blurry photo can have a lot of interesting qualities you don't see in 'good quality' photos.

<3 selfies.
We live in a visual culture where image is important.  Selfies are the ultimate expression of a person taking control of their own image and asserting this is me, this who, where, and what I am.  It's worth noting that the people most often mocked for taking selfies are the people least likely to be in control of their own image at a broader culture wide level.

Fuck the haters.*

You've this has just made me commit to change my avatar for the first time in like, 5 years.  Selfie time!

(*I feel the need to clarify that this is not a personal attack against anyone here, but a common expression which happens to contain a swear word.)
