So I just had someone on another forum actively try to convince us all that WW2 was because the Nazi leadership was gay. Therefore gays are evil.

Or something.

I.. just... I mean. wat?

 :psyduck:

In before Akima, who will point out with absolute correctness that WW2 started before the Nazis invaded anything.

Is preferring a specific ethnicity that is not your own any worse than preferring your own ethnicity?

No, I don't think so - but marrying someone you've never met based entirely on the fact that they're a member of an ethnicity you think is "exotic" is problematic in a huge number of ways. Obviously there are issues with the concept of a mail-order bride that have nothing to do with ethnicity but it's a factor.

Well of course, I don't dispute that. I just wanted to make sure that your talk of people who "fetishise ethnicities" wasn't referring to anyone who happened to have a preference. (I don't, but I don't think it's inherently bad to)

I wouldn't consider myself to have a preference, but I have never been attracted to anyone who wasn't white. Then again, I can count on my fingers the number of non-white people I actually know more than superficially, although now that I've moved to a city with actual diversity that is changing.

Preferences doesn't necessarily mean requirements.  For example I am attracted to blonde women, but that doesn't mean I will only date blonde women.  Though I have met people who do think preferences = requirements.

I am attracted to redheads, preferably with bladed weapons.

So I suppose really I'm attracted to Red Sonja. :p

Haven't we recently had this conversation else where? It seems very familiar.

Open-heart surgery on a hard drive is not a common skill!

You've tried all the folk remedies like putting it in the freezer?

the freezer thing wouldnt help with this.  Or at least I dont think it would make the heads or bearing unstuck.  I mean I could open it and fix it in a jiffy but any bit of dust getting in there is bad news bears.

In our lab we sometimes take apart old hard drives and use the voice coil to make a laser shutter. Not that that would help you with your situation, though.

We should go back to having button flies. Zippers break too easily. Sure, buttons pop off too, but sewing a button back on is pretty simple. If the metal teeth going flying off the zipper of your favorite pair of jeans, well that's just too damn bad isn't it?

The jeans I'm wearing have button flies - do you have difficulty finding them?

Never in my life have I seen a store selling jeans with button flies. I've seen dress pants with them however.

My uniform trousers (except for dress uniforms) all had button flies. Not bad. Zippers are easier though.

"A Freudian slip is when you say something by mistake that gives away what you were really wanking about." - Ricky Gervais.

My random thought is about the way we acclimate/adapt to colder temperatures. I go to school in the mountains. After 2 weeks of 60+ highs, right now it's 30F and sleeting. The high for today is 35. In the grand scheme of winter weather, it's not that cold, but it feels damn cold. People, including me, are bundled up tight, and the wind makes your face go numb. Yesterday the high was around 40 and it still felt quite cold. The day before when the temps dropped to around 50 is when everyone pulled out the jackets started complaining about the cold.

Last winter, there was this really random day in January (after it had snowed all month) where the high was about 50. People were so excited that they went out in shorts and tank tops. If anyone did that on the 50 degree day we had a couple days ago, they would probably have been transported to the nearest psychiatric hospital.

That is pretty funny. If you go to Oslo, Norway around April/May, you'll see the natives sunbathing in nothing more than swimwear in parks, in 15C/60F weather, while tourists from warmer countries are bundled up in massive winter coats. It's a really strange sight.

Living in this part of the country has completely destroyed my resistance to cold weather. I remember back when I was in college in Pennsylvania, I'd be wearing shorts whenever it was above freezing (and a few times when it was below freezing...). But now if it's below 60F I don't even go outside without a jacket on.

I'm just a wuss, even thought I grew up where -20C/-4F isn't uncommon in winter, and I've experienced -40C/F a few times, I never go outside without a jacket if it's below 15C/60F either. I get cold very quickly.

Yeah, but then they'd know to look for the guy with the unreadable DNA.
Not if they find your original, unmodified DNA. If they find your new DNA, just make a new virus!

Also, it won't be unreadable because they identify you by how many repeats are in your SRTs. Splicing repeats in or out won't make it look like modified DNA.

Infect everybody with the virus.
That would have no discernible effect in everyday life, but if everyone in the world suddenly gained a few repeats in their DNA, it would confuse the shit out of every forensic geneticist.

I just got the image of a midwife and a woman giving birth swinging towards each other on a trapeze - when they meet, the midwife pulls the baby out. The knife juggler is standing on the floor and cuts the umbilical cord with a a knifethrow.

Nah, that sounds like a Dan Brown novel.

I seem to vaguely remember that in one of the books (I think it was "Children of the Mind").

edit -- it was actually "Xenocide", although they found the cure for it in "Children of the Mind", if I understood the Wikipedia article correctly. Also, there's apparently a new prequel I didn't know about.
