For those who are curious, Faye is likely using something like this here welder. It's about as portable as they come, plugs into a standard 120V single-phase outlet, and has enough power to do all but the largest jobs efficiently. It actually almost looks like a TiG conversion sitting on top of a buzz box, kinda like so: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/topages/tigkit.php
If you know how to verify it's in good working order (won't electrocute you or spontaneously combust), a cheap second-hand buzz box isn't hard to come across and the conversion makes for a TiG welder that won't break the bank.
As for why she'd do it at the coffee shop, she lives in an apartment where else is she going to do it at? Apartments are not large-equipment hobby friendly.

Thanks for the info! I'm going to have to pass this along to some college friends of mine - they need a welder on the cheap, and this would be a perfect solution for them. :-)
... I mean, short of a full-blown MIG setup, but hey.
