It's worth noting that Marten hadn't finished speaking. Emily cut him off with her ohyesyoudid. For all we know, he could have been about to say "Uh, no... not really, just idle chat, you know".

I'm not sure Emily's actually oblivious here. In fact she might well be closer to the "fuck you, guy" end of the scale; Marten really needs to learn to stop lying to people. Especially women who are his boss, and especially in front of witnesses who can call him on it and have no reason to support him.
