I'm really puzzled as to why Marten is supposed to be upset.
IMHO such a behavior would just prove you're an asshole who thinks they "own" people.

Until now, I was neutral towards Gabby. Now I just dislike her.

No, based on the little we've seen of her, I don't like her either.
My belief is that altruism is one of the best examples of a quality a human can exhibit which demonstrates how far we have come from simply following our basic urges to eat, sleep and reproduce. Or whatever it is we did back before developing opposable thumbs. :P
The idea that you can't just do a selfless act or develop a selfless mind-set just by virtue of being selfless, or a nice person - the idea that there has to be some kind of ulterior motive behind it - that doesn't sit well with me at all.
