Hi, I'm (on a) New (computer)!

<< < (5/6) > >>

celticgeek:
My dislike of ubuntu has increased to a much more intense feeling, which has spilled over onto Canonical and Shuttleworth.

I have installed Mint 13 (Maya) instead.

Omega Entity:
Just ordered the parts for my new system on Thursday. I'll be building off an ASUS motherboard with an Ivy Bridge i5 3550 3.3 GHz processor and a 750W power supply. Gonna salvage my GeForce 9500GT 1GB card, hard drive w/ XP installation and CD drives out of my old system for now, then puchase a PCIe 3.0 card and another HD for a Win7ult install later on down the road.

Carl-E:
My wife gave up waiting for me to (re)solder the new jack into her laptop, and got a new (used) one.  A Toshiba - It's very nice.

Then she spilt most of a cup of coffee on the keyboard... the computer still works, but the keyboard's fried.  She bought a $10 external keyboard.

Works fine, but it's Just not nearly as portable now...

Redball:
I ruined my 2007 MacBook Pro doing what should have been a routine repair and maintenance Sunday morning and made a 4-hour round trip to Ann Arbor to pick up a brand new one.
The old one was a little slow but ran the latest Mac OS and all the software I needed. I was eyeing a new one but thought I'd wait until the old one crashed.
The optical drive had failed. I have a choir rehearsal CD burning project this coming week, so I'd ordered a replacement rather than open up the old one. The new one slid in easily. The fans had been noisy, so I moved them aside to blow out some dust. One had to be disconnected.
Had I RTFM, I would have known to pull on its wires. Instead, I used a blade as a spudger and ruined the receptacle mounted on the logic board. No left fan, I assumed, means no certainty that the computer will cool adequately, and it often runs hot.
I guess I was looking for an excuse.
The little receptacle shouldn't be hard to find, but I've no successful experience with surface mount soldering.

Redball:
Carl, do you have any experience with SMD soldering? Wish I could find a gifted amateur to restore my 4-pin receptacle for a case of Yeungling or equivalent.
