And I've never encountered it. I love puns, love to utter them and write them. I expect groans, but I don't hear groans as a sign of vocal distaste so much as simple acknowledgement, maybe even grudging approbation. If the pun is called the lowest form of humor, it's fitting that it be greeted by groans. The worst response to a pun is silence. I had to nudge my wife occasionally if she didn't react. OK, maybe that was a sign of distaste.

Also, I should apologize for my overly-harsh reproof earlier. I just don't like new people disrespecting established posters.
