Well, to be fair, doing something fancy with your hair when you plan to go swimming seems a bit pointless.

True, but "putting it up" so it doesn't end a tangled mess isn't a bad idea.  Pigtails may be her preferred swimming hairstyle.  My own daughters tended towards braiding each other's hair in the car on the way to the lake / ocean / pool.
