I would probably automatically take the ponytails out of my hair after swimming as well. Having them up keeps them out of your eyes, and if they're fastened tightly they'd stay in the same shape anyway, but if you leave them fastened up wet they dry in a funny shape. I'd assume that's true of synthetic hair as well.
