That being said, I wouldn't mind giving it a go and bring proven wrong...

And there you are, being proven wrong and not minding. :)

Whether it makes it to the site or not is for time to find out. But whether it does or doesn't, I like to think that he'd appreciate the sentiment, nonetheless.

Carl, given how most things designed in a committe work, you weren't unjustified being skeptical about the whole thing.

And DSL - that's great.

That last one has enough in-jokes to satisfy anyone who's a regular on these boards ($1.98 Drill Press, choosing the specials of the day...)

I didn't catch that the first time.  :D

The QC forumgoers have apparently started being amazing with alarming regularity. Was there some kind of memo I missed? :P

After doing a low-res version for my own reference, I caught a few other goodies in the background that I have to applaud DSL for:

* The smiley face on the cash register;
* Faye's scar;
* The difference between Marigold's glasses and Faye's;
* Pintsize getting whacked around by Faye;
* Winslow as the holo-projector.

This is the reply I got when I e-mailed Jeph with the flickr link:

Quote
"Whoa this is really good! I will probably run it over the weekend. You guys are sweethearts."

I asked if he wanted the hi-rezzes and offered to stack them in his usual layout but no reply to that.

But yeah, I'm as jazzed as anyone here.

Great idea, jwhouk!

DSL: not to make more work for you, but...

I've been intending to make a donation to help defray his costs from this incident (at http://tinyurl.com/QCDonation), but then something occurred to me...

What would be the feasibility of doing prints of this strip and giving them out for people donating to the site for purposes of helping out with his surgery/copays/etc?

I'm totally fine if the answer is "waay too much work and of dubious legality and [insert concern here]", and I intend to donate anyway, but do you have any experience doing stuff like this?

Also, you seem to be in communication with Jeph and might have a sense of how well it would be received...

Legality is the concern, first last and always ... and if I were Jeph's lawyer (I'm not anyone's lawyer) I 'd advise him to tell us NO just to establish a precedent/maintain a pattern of protecting his copyright.

But to do something that doesn't involve his or anyone else's characters -- or just passing the hat -- I'd support that.

I'd ask Jeph about selling prints to defray his osts. He might suggest, or we might, that they be sold through Topatoco, but with a marketing push through the forum as well as the Topatoco site. Wouldn't matter to me.

I did this just for fun with the understanding that this would remain a forum-project with a SLIGHT CHANCE of Jeph "publishing" it as a guest strip.

The fact that he may indeed publish it is double-fucking fantastic.

I wouldn't dare ask for more, such as the right to sell the work...  I'm satisfied with "might publish"

Stick with the traditional donation methods and let this project stand alone as an achievement unto itself.

I figured this would be a labor of love from all of us in the forums, and just the idea that he considers putting it up is just icing on the proverbial cake.

I'll say this:

Given the last few tweets Jeph has sent, I'll say this:  If the choice is between using our little comic and Jeph getting back on the bicycle, I vote for a Monday resumption of straight-up QC. He needs his comic worse than we do.

This is true, as it is the man's profession.

Part of me wonders how many guest strips he got from other sources.

Speaking only as a minor supporter of this process, it wouldn't bother me a bit if this went into his guest strip bank.

It also wouldn't bother me if he used guest strips more often to give himself brain breaks (you don't need to have a trip planned to take a vacation).

That said, from the outside his process seems so tied to walking the tightrope of constant unrelenting output that I wouldn't want him to bust up his productivity cycle either.

I wish him success in finding whatever works.

Something I should mention:

I intentionally did not include myself in the list of people in the "tag line" at the end of the proposed strip.

At the very least, he should be put under "support".  Several people he put there freely admitted they shouldn't have been listed...

So despite any objections, the support he lent is inarguable and should be credited.

No arguments, JW.

Throwing out an idea:

We could do something revolving around the cast if they ever found parts of these forums. Like Marigold going on a Wikia Editing Binge, or Dora (or Faye?) doing captions, or Marten trying to discuss alt-lifestyles - or something to that effect.

And a punchline could be Hannelore reading every. Single. Post. On the FORUMS.

Modest he may wish to be, but that contribution is very recognisable in the final result, and should be credited.

Considering:

-- pwhodges excellent point, together with "smoking gun" quote; and
-- jwhouk putting together a credit bar that makes it look like it was my brain-baby;

I'm changing the main credit line to include him and me. I figure it'll take him about six hours at minimum to drive here to try and stop me.

So there, jwhouk. We love you too.

Oh my god you guys, congratulations! I've been severely distracted for the past couple weeks which is part of why I didn't contribute, and now I wish I'd made time lol. Anyway, it looks awesome!

You have your part yet to play, you know.

I have finally contributed to  something on the Internet that is NOT pornographic,  vengeful trolling or the cause of  LJ-level emowank.     :-D

I don't know which stuns me more ... the fact that the forum-comic was finished, the fact that it actually ran, the fact that Jeph liked it, or the fact that he actually came into the forum and thanked us. I mean, a nice note at the bottom of today's comic would have been good enough, but...

May your real-life drama soon be replaced by entirely fictional.
