ok, i kinda gave up on star wars years ago. but if any of that is true, it'd be the first thing i've heard thus far that makes me think this thing still has some promise.

(click to show/hide)particularly, i like the idea that the war has been continuing on for decades, caught in a stalemate. the whole assumption that the war was won after return of the jedi, always seemed too simplistic to me (even for star wars). a civil war is not a game of chess, where taking the king ends the game; and likewise, it makes no sense that the whole empire would fall, just because the emperor got assassinated.

i also like the idea of luke retreating into seclusion, rather than opening a jedi school or something. with the fact that he never really got anything beyond the most basic intro-level training, it make much more sense that he would decide to go off alone & spend years trying to figure it all out himself. especially if he's trying to get away from his hero/celebrity status as the guy who blew up the deathstar & helped kill the emperor.

if nobody knows much about his personal history, he might even have decided to return to his homeworld & take up farming again as a cover identity. then maybe as he grows stronger, potential students start to find themselves subtly and mysteriously drawn there; searching for someone, but not knowing who.

i also really dig the idea of 'minimalistic' lightsaber fights. the big acrobatic fight-scenes of the prequels never really did much for me. but if you go back to the original, slow paced duel between obiwan and darth, it actually makes a sort of sense as the way two jedi knights would fight each other; like a chess match, each using their ability to sense the other's intentions to try & out-predict them, looking for the subtlest advantage before they attack. obiwan realized they were at a stalemate, with only one quick way to end things.*

of course the reality is that the fight was slow & simple because it was a basic kendo drill, performed by a guy who couldn't see shit in his costume, and an old man who couldn't give a shit about the movie he was in, but that's neither here nor there.

honestly, i don't know how they could possibly make a coherent movie with all that baggage attached to it; trying to make it fit with decades of stories, which were often contradictory, and of extremely varying quality. starting with a clean slate really is the best option, i think.

besides which, do you think disney would really canonize any material they didn't have complete and total copyright control over?

LeeC:
IS anyone else snickering that John Boyega's Character's name is Finn as in Finn the human?

Neko_Ali:
It's the first thing I thought of.. The question is, who is Jake?

LeeC:
The droid BB-8?
