This option suggests to me that Marten got Pintsize while still in California; perhaps that's why Vicky left (yes, I know that doesn't really fit).

Perhaps the whalebot is what he would have been allocated if he had never left California. No heartbreak, no roborachnophobic trauma, no Pintsize. Later he'd have moved to Hawaii, picked up a gig playing slack-key guitar, and settled down with a nice girl like Kono Kalakaua...

Having read the Wikipedia page about Slim Jims, and followed the links to some of their ingredients, I feel slightly ill.
