The UK has a love/hate relationship with the metric system.  There was a time when I could buy plasterboard (aka drywall) in the size: 1219mm x 900mm - that is: 4' x 2'11.43".  This arose from trying to make as many lengths as possible sorta metric (the length 300mm even gets called a "metric foot"), while still respecting the fact that the studding in partition walls has been spaced at 16" intervals since the use of plasterboard began.
