It was a large late victorian era house.  The majority of the expansive front porch had been turned into a sunroom (southern exposure), so the door that had gone to the front porch opened onto a small enclosed area that went down stairs to the side - the door faced forward, but the whole enclosure filed with snow.  The back door was in the side of the house at the foot of the back stairs - essentially a service entrance. 

Oh god, the things you can find on the internet... here's a pic of the house from an online realty site.  The decorative window on the side was completely covered.  Like I said, we got out off a second floor balcony in the back...
